Kon-Tiki pair to direct Pirates of the Caribbean 5

After much speculation as to who might board the Walt Disney Pictures franchise, Deadline is reporting that Pirates of the Caribbean 5 has scored a director double-helping in the Kon-Tiki pair of Joachim Rψnning and Espen Sandberg.


Launched in 2003 with The Curse of the Black Pearl, the franchise has, in every film so far, featured Johnny Depp in the role of Captain Jack Sparrow. The most recent adventure, On Stranger Tides, also starred Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane and Sam Claflin and turned out more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office.


Catch Me If You Can scribe Jeff Nathanson has provided the screenplay for the as-of-yet-untitled adventure and production is slated to begin in January of 2014.


In addition to their acclaimed work on Kon-Tiki, Rψnning and Sandberg have together helmed Max Manus: Man of War and Bandidas, the latter of which starred Cruz opposite Salma Hayek.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales delayed; 2016 release likely

Although Captain Jack Sparrow is set to sail again in the forthcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Walt Disney Pictures now brings word that the project won't make its original release date of July 10, 2015. Although nothing is set in stone, studio sources indicate that a 2016 release is likely. The news comes just one day after the studio rescheduled the Marvel Studios property Ant-Man.

Disney to release Pirates of the Caribbean 5 in 2017

Walt Disney Pictures just announced that Pirates of the Caribbean 5 will hit theaters on July 7, 2017. The movie, which previously was said to have the subtitle of "Dead Men Tell No Tales," has that date to itself for now.

A week before, on June 30, Universal Pictures has scheduled Despicable Me 3, while a week after, on July 14, 20th Century Fox was planning to release The Fantastic Four 2. Disney and Marvel Studios also recently announced that a mystery movie will open on July 28, 2017.

Orlando Bloom could return for Pirates of the Caribbean 5

Little is known about the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean 5, including if it will carry the previously-announced subtitle "Dead Men Tell No Tales." It's expected that franchise star Johnny Depp will return, but could we be seeing another previous cast member show up? Speaking at Oz Comic Con a few days ago (via Daily Mail), actor Orlando Bloom revealed that he might return for the fifth film in the $3 billion franchise.

"There have certainly been some discussions about it and I'm open to it," the actor said. "That whole experience working with Johnny (Depp) and (director) Gore (Verbinski) was really amazing for me."

Last we saw Orlando Bloom's Will Turner at the end of 2007's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End he was the current captain of The Flying Dutchman, cursed to spend his life at sea for ten years at a time before he could return to land for just one day. Though a post-credit stinger did tease his eventual return to Keira Knightley's Elizabeth and their child, it's possible the upcoming film could fill in that ten-year gap.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales casts Brenton Thwaites

Rumored to have been up for the part late last month, The Giver star Brenton Thwaites has, according to a story at TheWrap, scored the coveted role of “Henry” in the upcoming blockbuster franchise sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Thwaites also made an appearance earlier this year in Walt Disney Pictures’ Maleficent. Little is known about his Henry, although the character is said to be a British Soldier. The young star recently completed production on Alex Proyas’ Gods of Egypt, set for release February 12, 2016.

Orlando Bloom reveals Pirates of the Caribbean 5 could be a reboot

On the heels of yesterday’s casting story for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, another interesting tidbit about the high seas franchise has emerged as series star Orlando Bloom (who has previously revealed there are talks he could return) has offered up that the next entry could serve as a reboot.

“I’m not entirely sure that [I'll be back] just yet, but there are talks,” he tells IGN. “Basically they want to reboot the whole franchise, I think, and do something with me and the relationship with my son… I’m of course Davey Jones now, so I’m down the bottom of the ocean. It might be kind of fun to do something where I’m rumbling round the bottom of the ocean, because I won’t look anything like me. [Gestures to face] Get all gnarly.”

Should he return, Bloom will join newcomer Brenton Thwaites along with Johnny Depp, reprising his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow, Geoffrey Rush, returning as Captain Barbossa, and Javier Bardem, debuting as the film’s villain, Captain Brand.

Although full plot details are not yet available, the film is said to see Brand as a ghost hellbent on getting revenge against Sparrow, blaming the rake for the death of his brother.

The most recent chapter in the highly successful franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, was released in the summer of 2011 and grossed more than one billion dollars at the worldwide box office.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is set for a Queensland, Australia production. Kon-Tiki helmers Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg will direct with Jerry Bruckheimer back to produce. Look for it to hit theaters on July 7, 2017.

Kaya Scodelario confirmed for Pirates of the Caribbean 5

We learned a few days ago that British actress Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner, “Skins”) was closing in on the female lead in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and now producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that Scodelario has landed the role. Bruckheimer also revealed the filming for the fifth installment will start in February in Queensland, Australia.

Scodelario can be seen later this year in the sequel Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, as she will again play Teresa in the September 18 release.

Johnny Depp is reprising his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow, while Geoffrey Rush will be returning as Captain Barbossa. Javier Bardem will play the film’s villain, Captain Brand, and Brenton Thwaites has been cast as British soldier Henry in the film. Scodelario will play Henry’s love interest.

Although still unconfirmed, rumors have persisted that this film may see the return of Orlando Bloom’s William Turner as well.
