James Gunn nixes Guardians of the Galaxy crossover with Avengers

With Josh Brolin recently telling us to expect “Thanos against everyone,” a lot of fans were hoping this would mean a full-on Guardians of the Galaxy/Avengers crossover come Avengers: Infinity War, but as James Gunn explained to Screen Junkies, a two-team team-up isn’t likely.

“[We're] trying to make [Avengers] effect it as little as possible,” said Guardians helmer Gunn when asked how much the dark tone of Avengers: Age of Ultron would effect Guardians of the Galaxy 2. “We really are separate from the Avengers, and I don’t think people should assume too many things about the Guardians play in all this. We have our own galaxy to take care of. We have our own galaxy to save. Earth is the Avengers’ province. Thinking that everything is going to come together in a perfect way is not necessarily the way it’s gonna happen.”

ThanosWhile it may have been an idea at one point to have a massive team-up, the quirky comedic sensibility of Guardians makes it an odd juxtaposition with the rest of the MCU. If the first film was any indication, we would definitely say Dave Bautista’s Drax and Brolin’s Thanos are on a collision course–not to mention some unresolved issues between the Mad Titan and his adopted daughter Gamora (Zoe Saldana)–yet that may not affect the two Infinity War films any more than the battle of New York in Avengers affected Guardians (pretty much nil). Infinity stones have been the McGuffin that ties all of Marvel’s films together, but the success of Gunn’s vision proves he doesn’t need Captain America or Iron Man to get butts in the seats.

One thing fans CAN expect from Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is more of Star-Lord’s outlaw mentor Yondu, as well as Sean Gunn’s Kraglin.

“Listen, Michael Rooker is my good friend,” Gunn stated. “Where would I be without Michael Rooker by my side on a film project. I haven’t made a movie yet without him. Who knows? There’s a good chance we’ll see at least a little bit more Yondu…. And Kraglin, my brother! I love those ravagers, they’re one of my favorite parts of the movie.”

Guardians of the Galaxy 2’s official title is…

After quite a bit of fan speculation, writer and director James Gunn officially revealed the title of his much-anticipated follow-up to last year’s Marvel Studios cosmic adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy. The May 5, 2017 will be called Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

“Yes, the official title of the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” Gunn just posted to his official Facebook page. “Kevin Feige recently let the title slip while doing Ant-Man press, which I’m really happy about because God knows I’ve let more than one thing slip accidentally while chattering away on this FB page. Also, hats off to some intrepid fans who figured out the title a couple of days after I posted the cover page. More than one person guessed ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2′ – I wanted so badly to give you props at the time, but knew I had to wait.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will once again feature Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper as unlikely heroes who must team up in order to defeat a cosmic force of epic proportions.

“For Kevin to mess up,” Gunn also jokes at the end of his announcement. “Haha.”

French actress Pom Klementieff joins Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 cast

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 cast is growing today with the addition of French actress Pom Klementieff! The Hollywood Reporter says that Marvel Studios conducted a wide search for the mystery role, which called for an Asian actress.

Klementieff has previously appeared in Spike Lee’s Oldboy. Her credits also include such films as Loup (2009), Sleepless Night (2011) and the upcoming Hacker’s Game (2015).

Zoe Saldana shares behind-the-scenes photo preparing for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

With production set to begin on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 early next year in Atlanta, Georgia, star Zoe Saldana has shared a behind-the-scenes shot wherein the actress is having a facial cast prepared, presumably for the make-up department to create her prosthetic pieces for the role of Gamora. The Guardians of the Galaxy assemble in a rehearsal photo

Rehearsals continue for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and writer/director James Gunn has revealed new images from the film’s pre-production with the titular heroes all together, sans Groot of course. You can view the rehearsal photos below.

“When someone’s screwing up a scene during rehearsals I show them Dave Bautista as an example of good acting,” the director writes.

You’ll also notice that Gunn’s brother Sean Gunn, who also plays the Ravager Kraglin, as the stand-in for Rocket Raccoon, a role he filled for the first film as well.

Gunn went on to reveal that production on the film will officially begin on Thursday, February 11.

An exciting new look at James Gunn‘s highly-anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has debuted today at EW. Concept art for the sequel (from artist Andy Park) reveals a new look at the team, including a glimpse of Pom Klementieff’s Mantis and the return of Baby Groot! Check it out below.

“He doesn’t have the wisdom and experience of that Groot,” executive producer Jonathan Schwartz tells the outlet. “He’s a younger Groot and a more rambunctious Groot. The question is, is he the same Groot, just smaller? Or is he a different Groot that’s sprung up from the seed of the first Groot?”

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 reveals Quill’s father & new logo

Marvel Studios revealed the identity of Peter Quill’s father in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 during their San Diego Comic-Con panel: EGO THE LIVING PLANET! To be played by Kurt Russell, Ego will play a central role in the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 plot, and director James Gunn posted about it on Facebook in which he states that the movie will answer the question, “How can a planet father a child?” Check out the Facebook posting below, as well as the sequel’s new logo!
