Faroudja FLI-23xx Problems? (Denon 3910, Zenith DVB318 Issues)
I posted this over in the thread about "macroblocking" in the Denon 3910 and it got lost, so here it is on it's own:

I'm seeing an issue that I believe is an inherent deinterlacing and/or chroma bandwidth artifact in the Faroudja FLI-23xx chips. The reason I say this is that I've noticed it now in the Denon 5900, the 3910, and the Zenith DVB318. It manifests as swarming light pinkish or magenta blotchiness in areas of monochromatic color. Gray or beige tones show it the worst. Although I've seen this problem on a large number of discs, there are two scenes in particular I use as a test:
* Hulk: Chapter 23 ("Desert Fury") at time marker 1:37:33. As Hulk slides down the sand dunes and runs across the shadowed face of a dune, there is pink blotchiness all over the sand.
* Lawrence of Arabia Superbit: Disc One, Chapter 14 at time marker 52:32. As Lawrence walks away from the camera into the dunes at night, there is pink blotchiness swarming all through the blowing sand in the foreground.
These are but two examples. On the Denons it was much less noticable on 480p component, and worse on DVI output at any resolution. I could eliminate it completely by switching to interlaced component output. On the Zenith the problem is equally noticable on both component and DVI outputs at any resolution. Since the Zenith doesn't output interlaced video on component I couldn't test it. Viewing these same scenes with the Pioneer DV-59AVi showed NO TRACE of blotchiness. NONE. All players were calibrated separately with DVE. My display is an ISF calibrated Hitachi 57SWX20B CRT RPTV.
I'd be interested in hearing opinions and observations regarding this problem, because make no mistake, it *is* a problem.
