General Questions:

How much previous knowledge must one have, in order to operate a Linux-based device, such as the ReelBox?

In order to operate the ReelBox, no previous knowledge is necessary. The manual explains all operations of the ReelBox step-by-step, and was written explicitly for beginners.

Where will I be able to purchase the ReelBox PVR 1100?

For individual purchases, please visit our Retail Area.

How much will the ReelBox PVR 1100 cost?

The recommended retail price of the ReelBox PVR 1100 S for the German market lies by € 699 (incl. 16% Sales Tax). Recommended retail prices for the Model PVR 1100 CT and the individual ReelTuners will still be announced.

A quiet operation of the ReelBox PVR 1100 is very important to me. Is there a ventilator in the ReelBox PVR 1100? does the ReelBox PVR 1100 reduce the operating sound of the DVD-drive and the hard-drive?

Thanks to an innovative casing-concept, the ReelBox PVR 1100 S does not need a ventilator. When playing DVD's and CD's, the applicable drive only operates as quickly as necessary, in order to reduce the omitted sound to a minimum. However, when ripping Audio-CD's to the hard-drive at high speed, the ReelBox PVR 1100 S is capable of functioning at highest capacity. The ReelBox was designed in this way, because it seemed more important to emphasize speed over volume for this specific function.

Audio

Is it possible to save ReelBox MP-3 files to the optional hard-drive and then transfer this data to other devices?

Yes. Since the ReelBox is equipped with multiple interfaces, e.g. FireWire, it is possible to connect other devices, such as MP-3 Players.

Does the ReelBox PVR 1100 S support Dolby Digital (AC3)?

Yes, the coaxial and optical S/PDIF-extensions support Dolby Digital.

How about the DTS-signal?

Yes, DTS and DTS-ES signals can be received via the audio extensions.
DVB-Receiver

How many channels does the ReelBox PVR 1100 S offer?

The ReelBox PVR 1100 S offers endless possibilities for extending memory capacities. The ReelBox PVR 1100 S is capable of receiving all digital channels available to your satellite equipment. The ReelBox PVR 1100 S processes all channels, received by your cable television provider via analog or digital means, in addition to broadcasting the complete spectrum of digital TV (Terrestric-television), which is currently only available in select regions. For more detailed information, please refer to Digital TV.

Is it Possible to connect the ReelBox PVR 1100 S to multiple TV sets? If so: is it possible to receive different channels simultaneously?

Using both scart-ports or an external RF-modulator (not contained in delivery), it is possible to connect multiple TV-sets. However, the same station is broadcast on all sets. Viewing multiple stations simultaneously is only possible, if the device is fitted with a Streaming Client. A Client-Software for PC-use is currently being developed.

I have a satellite dish and a cable connection. Is it possible to utilize both sources simultaneously?

Yes, this is no problem for the ReelBox PVR 1100 S - just exchange one of the two included DVB-Tuner modules for a tuner of a different model. If you have the ReelBox PVR 1100 CT model, you can upgrade by replacing one of the DVB-CT-combi-tuners with the ReelTuner DVB-S. Vice Versa, if you have the ReelBox PVR 1100 S model, you can upgrade by replacing one of the DVB-S-combi-tuners with a ReelTuner DVB-CT.

How much will an additional ReelTuner DVB-S or DVB-CT cost?

The recommended retail prices for these items will be announced.
DVD-Player

Does the ReelBox play SACD-discs?

No, a special disc drive would be needed for this function.

Is it possible to view DVD's in NTSC format?

Yes, it is possible to view DVD's in the NTSC format.

Input/Output

What capabilities does the IEEE-1394 (firewire) interface have to offer?

This interface is used mainly to support mass storage devices. An extension of these capabilities to support CD/DVD-burners and Digital Camcorders is in planning. The operation of FireWire on a network starts only, if a stabile Linux-driver exists. Network operation via Ethernet, however, is possible right from the onset.

Which USB capabilities is the ReelBox PVR 1100 S equipped with?

The ReelBox PVR 1100 S comes equipped with over three USB-1.0-portals. For quick transmission, the ReelBox PVR 1100 S further features three FireWire portals (IEEE 1394).

The ReelBox PVR 1100 S has plenty of analog and digital Inputs and Outputs, but I am missing DVI.

A common DVI extension is not permissable, under the conditions of the DVD forum, which is also responsible for licensing issues. For this reason, we have developed a system, which encodes data according to HDCP standards. This feature will be included in future versions of the PVR 1100. The ReelBox however contains two high-quality analog extensions, which produce images at almost identical quality: the VGA extension and the component extension.

Can I connect the ReelBox PVR 1100 S to a common TFT screen?

Yes, this presents no problem, as long as the monitor is equipped with a VGA extension (which is recommended) or a CVBS-/S-Video-portal (included in models with more features).

Does the ReelBox PVR 1100 S support the video standard NTSC?

Yes, NTSC is fully supported.

Does the ReelBox transmit the TUV signal via Cinch or Scart?

The ReelBox is capable of transmitting both.

Can I connect a standard PC keyboard and mouse to the ReelBox PVR 1100 S?

Yes, since the ReelBox is fitted with three USB portals, it is possible to connect standard PC equipment, such as a keyboard, mouse, et cetera.

Network/PC Compatibility

How do I connect the ReelBox to a wireless network?

In order to connect the ReelBox to a wireless network, you only need to have a WLAN card, which you can insert into the according Mini-PCI-terminal of the ReelBox. Additionally you can also connect an external WLAN adapter via USB. Prerequisite for the use of this function is that a Linux-driver exists. Reel Multimedia will maintain compatibility lists in the Upgrade section of the Reel Multimedia website.

Does the ReelBox PVR 1100 S also support wireless cards for the Common-Interface-Slots.

No. If you would like to use wireless LAN, we recommend the purchase of a Mini-PCI-card or an external USB-WLAN adapter.

If I link the ReelBox via network to my PC, is it possible to receive the channels live through the monitor?

This is possible with appropriate Client Software. At time of the release of the ReelBox PVR 1100 S, this client software however might still be in its development phase.

Which tools can I use in order to access the ReelBox via network?

The ReelBox supports the following protocols and standards: NFS, SMB/CIFS, HTTP, XML-RPC, FTP and SSH.

Pay-TV

Are the CI-slots of both tuners constantly in operation, or is a specific slot assigned to each tuner?

The CI-slots are used for both tuners simultaneously, in order to provide maximum flexibility.

Is is possible to record decoded Pay-TV channels using the ReelBox?

Yes, the ReelBox PVR 1100 S records decoded channels - given, of course, that you have the necessary Smartcard or Conditional Access Module for the respective pay-TV-channels.

Software

Which Linux distribution is used in the ReelBox?

The Reelbox Software is based on a modified version of Debian 3.1.

Does the ReelBox automatically upload software updates from the internet, or can I execute updates manually?

Whatever suits your needs.

Can I create personal software components for my ReelBox?

Yes, from the time of sale, a free developers-kit will be available.

Where can I find the source codes used for the ReelBox software?

The source codes will be released at time of sale, and will also be available for download through the developer's forum. There will also be an included CVS area.

Videorecorder

How many Timer entries are possible?

The number of timer entries is only restricted by the amount of memory available. This means, that up to a few thousand timer entries are theoretically possible.

Which hard-drives does the ReelBox PVR 1100 support?

The device supports all common 3,5 inch-IDE-hard discs with 5400 rpm, and has a maximum capacity of up to 300Gbyte (possibly more in the future). It is possible that larger versions will be offered shortly, as soon as the appropriate technology has been developed and tested. Faster hard-drives are not necessarily desirable, as they produce a large amount of heat. At time of introduction of the ReelBox to the market, there will be a positive list of all recommended types of hard-drives.

Are standard ATA hard drives supported?

By using an appropriate adapter (ATA according to S-ATA, not included in delivery), it is possible to support S-ATA hard drives.

Is a model of the ReelBox being developed which will feature an internal DVD burner? Can an external DVD burner be attached?

The ReelBox comes equipped with a DVD rom drive, however it does not feature a DVD burner. The reason for this is that upon examination we have found the current DVD burners to have many flaws. Especially at high speeds, many of the current DVD burners, burn insufficiently or include many errors. This has been shown regularly throughout tests featured in the trade journal c't. Especially the new Dual-Layer-burners, which in theory seem highly suitable to record films/movies, have not yet been fully developed. Additionally, we are expecting the first BluRay-disc-burner, with a 50Gbyte recording capacity, to be released by the end of the year. This would mean a 10x capacity increase compared to a common blank disc. With the purchase of the ReelBox you are on the safe side: the internal DVD-drive is interchangeable with a DVD burner. Additionally, you can link an external DVD burner to any of the three Fire Wire interfaces. In both cases, you will be able to chose the DVD burner which best suits your needs. The ReelBox Software will be able to record DVD'S through a free module, which will be supplied upon demand, however not at start of sale. Therefore, this feature is not yet being officially advertised. An alternative, however, in the meantime, is to transfer the data via Ethernet to your PC, and then to burn from there.

When going into recording mode, does the ReelBox automatically awake from its Standby-Modus?

Of course. If the video program has been set, for example via EPG, the ReelBox begins operations in time to start recording punctually. Should you have forgotten to program the desired channel, you can conveniently do this via remote control, either by using your mobile phone or via the Internet. This however is only possible, when the ReelBox is switched on. The great news is that through the Wake-on-LAN feature you can wake the ReelBox from its Deep-Standby mode. Afterwards, comfortably program your selection online.

The Wake-on-LAN feature can be activated if the ReelBox is connected to the Internet, for example through a suitable computer or router. If the ReelBox is attached to the Internet, it can also be programmed online, as long as it is in its standby mode.

Instead of using an internal hard drive, can I also use a NFS register?

Yes, recording via network using SMB/CIFS or NFS-releases is possible.

Some movies are broadcasted using Dolby-Digital-5.1-Sound. Is it possible to record the 5.1-Sound feature?

Yes, the ReelBox records all programs without a loss in quality, if necessary including additional audio tracks.

What format does the ReelBox use to save video- and audio streams to the database?

The stream is saved in the VDR compatible-PES format.

Is there a limitation in size to the recording or processing of audio- and video files?

The recording duration is only limited to the size of the hard-drive; there are no further limitations
