Home cinema fans in completely Germany wait longingly for it: Highly soluble pictorial material in the HDTV standard. Already for almost three years there are payable projectors with HDTV dissolution (1280x720), which are official "hp ready", but in all these years it gave no offerer of more appropriate "software". A bad state, which was caused straight by the incomprehensibly conservative and progress-hostile attitude of many medium managers in Germany.

But now there is light at the end of the tunnel: The PayTV transmitter premiere dared and offers a step as one first forward a hp package from three different channels (features, sport and documentations). The transmission functioned, only the appropriate hp-suited satellite satelliten-Receiver by the manufacturers were not in time finished placed. As the first officially premiere-hp-suited receiver now the Pace DS810 comes on the market. In very small number of items in the last weeks the first devices were delivered. 1. Processing, equipment and feature

1,1 processing

To unpacking equipment arranged surprisingly well for satellite satelliten-Receiver shows up: The receiver is held complete in black, with silver set off edges, works however in the processing only moderately.


The corners are rounded off and lend to the equipment a modern designer character, which can be merged into most living rooms problem-free. Fans of silver components will only have reason to the complaint.

The front screen is completely black reflected with a dark-blue, eight-digit DOT matrix display in the center. Also this combination works very elegantly.

Apart from the program number the display holds the user also with important information to the selected channel up to date. So one can read off here e.g. whether the current radiant emittance is copy-protected or not. The key maps are right hidden behind a flap dezent.

Likewise at the front different keys (tax cross, EPG, exit and Standby) are, with which a control is made possible also without remote maintenance.

1,2 connections

A view of the back shows generous connection variety, which is technical on the newest state of the art.

Beside the mandatory satellite input/outputs here 2x Scart, 1x YUV (Cinch) is, 1x HDMI, 1x clay/tone digitally optical (Toslink), 1x clay/tone similar to stereo (Cinch), 1x USB, 1x telephone connection.

For the HDTV rendition the HDMI and the YUV exit are particularly interesting. The latter is usable however only for not protected pictorial material, with features for "safety reasons" the similar expenditure is deactivated. This meant that one must call a "hp ready" projector or TV its own for the full premiere hp benefit, the one digital picture transmission with HDCP copy protection supports. This circumstance was however already longer admits and therefore no surprise. Fortunately the renowned projector manufacturers already before-before the devices for years and ausgestatttet accordingly.

In a modern home cinema the integration of the receivers should not represent a problem. The stress lies on "should", because in our practice test communication problems showed up: Both at a Panasonic TH50 PHD8 EK and with a Denon 4306 the HDCP coding of problems made and provided for picture misfires and/or whole loss. It appears thus that in the initial phase the meanwhile used connecting difficulties between certain models are to be expected. We hope that Pace eliminates here conscientiously and time near acted and with appropriate software updates the problems. The manufacturer took precautions anyhow: Updates are made automatically by satellite, without the user must worry to always be on the "running". Thus the Pace always remains box on the newest state of the art.

1,3 remote maintenance

Also the remote maintenance is arranged optically responding and at the same time functional. It is likewise black with a silver set off tax cross in the center. All keys can be attained intelligently arranged and well with a hand.


However the technical designers did not consider unfortunately that above all projector users will use a HDTV hDTV-Receiver at present: The remote maintenance does not have lit keys and in darkened areas is therefore not readable it. One should make oneself thus fast with the key arrangement familiar, so that one can use the operation also blindly.

2. Menu/operation

In the operation without surprising innovations one did, instead the Pace box shows an optically simple however well operated concept: After the first setting-up of all transmitters (up to 90min!) the adjustment can be made on the domestic system in the set UP menu.

The menu is clearly divided and almost self-describing in columns. By the safety device for children over the language up to the transmitter browsing here everything is fast selectable. For us the required picture parameters, it were particularly interesting are in the column "1,6 screen":

Apart from display format and output signal (RGB or YUV) also the used dissolution of the projector can be selected here: 576i (PAL), 576p (PAL progressive one), 720p and 1080i.

The Ausfloesung can be by the way also switched "on the fly" with a key of the remote maintenance directly.

Dissolution change-over of the remote maintenance

The function "Lippensynchronitaet" is particularly remarkable, with their can possible problems with retarded clay/tone be prevented. A special test sequence (flashing star) helps to co-ordinate the clay/tone and the picture.

To the standard of each modern digital Rceivers meanwhile an electronic program leader belongs, briefly to "EPG". The EPG of the Pace DS810 offers a preview of up to eight days and is as clear and practical to evaluate, here one exclusively on the substantial concentrated.

Altogether the control concept of the DS810 corresponds to the current state of the art: It is easy to learn and offers much functions and information without thereby technically "overloaded" to work. If one uses however the YUV exit, the signal remains the "Zappen" also after switching, accordingly faster goes.

3. Image output

After the conception of the receivers the probably most stretching part remains, the image quality. How did premiere the "HDTV beginning" succeed? In order to examine this, we attached the Prime Minister hp box to our present reference projector, the SonyVPL-VW100, in order to use the full Potenzial of the 1080i transmissions also picture-technically.

As already mentions in the introduction, the hp package covers three different channels/program sections: Features, sport and documentations. With each these sections is the raw material another:

- sport

One of the large course horses of HDTV is the sport, not least also the Fussball-WM2006 in Germany. Straight one with sport transmissions becomes the advantage of HDTV particularly clearly: All details such as player numbers, spectator's stands etc. are now clearly recognizable, as if one would participate live.


Also the structure of the lawn is now clearly more plastic, compared with the too strongly compressed standard definition transmissions of the same transmitter is here the advantage of the hp version particularly clear. Only with Kameraschwenks (snapped ball passports) still clear Unschaerfen was to be registered with our test. But altogether the hp sport quality is on a good level.

Also close-ups show a perfectly new detail loyalty, it make simply much more fun to pursue the happening approximately around the sport. Sport fans should risk a here in any case sample view.

- documentations

With "Discovery hp" premiere does also somewhat for the general education and offers to its subscribers each quantity documentations from all knowledge ranges. Also here the HDTV standard can provide for more realism. With our sighting it showed up however that the momentary image quality depends strongly on the raw material: Many photographs were noted originally only with standard SD (PAL or NTSC) cameras and do not offer not sufficient Potenzial in order to profit from a hp transmission to.

Other scenes again show a very high detail wealth, which underlines the documentary character of the photographs impressing.

Particularly impressing we felt a 3D-Animation of urzeitlicher dinosaurs during our sample looking. Here obviously in a very high resolution one worked, which becomes effective with premiere hp fully.


CGI animations anyway always profit from hp in a special measure, since they are free from film noise or objective Unschaerfen.


Almost already photo-realistically: The primeval times


- features

Sport and documentations are good, but for home cinema fans from special interest still are features. On the feature channel of premiere hp here various films will allabendlich transfer. The present offer does not consist yet of topical titles, but nevertheless the quality knows to convince. Usual transmissions were at present this Previews "rock crystal", "Underworld" and "open rank". These films offered a very good transmission quality, which does not have to hide itself before the well-known transmissions from the USA.

Also German productions convince,
at least in the image quality.

4. Result

The entrance duo "premiere hp and Pace DS810 Hp hD-Receiver" made a very good figure in our Preview test: The receiver box Pace DS810 is optical addressing to serve easily and offers numerous functions, which can be very useful in the daily Gerbrauch. The required connections are various and for modern home cinemas and TVs (keyword: HDMI and YUV) conceive.

And also the most important, which image quality, has our expectations fulfilled, even exceeded. The presently used data rates are generously limited and permit in connection with MPEG4 to a very large extent artifact freis a picture, which carries the name "HDTV" rightfully. Everyone, which did not get HDTV correctly before yet to face, will not any longer turn out out in connection with a good hp ready projector or TV from being astonished:
Sport wins in relation to past transmissions at image definition, disturbing noise or Kloetzchenbildung belongs to the past. Considering the fact that one knows sharings protected against wind and weather at home, it is nearly already better the HDTV alternative to be than live thereby.
Same applies to features: The required sharpness exceeds most public cinemas with its not rarely worn out Zelluloid strips by far and shows that also the DVD does not represent for a long time the maximally feasible.

This premiere offer comes exactly in time at a time appropriately to use and represent in which almost all usual new projectors and TVs in the situation is, the quality of HDTV, which is not to be found appropriate software however yet at the market. Because until to country the HDTV able successors of the DVD, BluRay and HP-DVD are to be erweben here, available, still some months will offense.

Apart from teething troubles typical for a new technology (long switching times, copy protection as well as the compatibility lacking to some devices) only one fact disturbs the HDTV benefit: One gets accustomed too fast to it! Because if one saw only a few films and transmissions in the Brillianz of hp, the conventional PAL programs, with their small dissolution, occur to low data rates and endlessly the many disturbing artifacts resulting from it like an outdated Relikt from past times and work increasingly "unreasonably". We can only recommend to each home cinema fan to be able to be impressed from premiere hp and warn also at the same time to get accustomed too fast to the quality.
