Audi and Bang & Olufsen will be presenting an unprecedented musical experience for luxury class cars in the new Audi A8 at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in the Autumn. The sound distribution and stereo image are perfect, no matter where you sit in the Audi A8, and the sound level matches the best high-end stereo systems for the home. This new and unique audio system was made possible by close cooperation between Audi and Bang & Olufsen.

ICEpower amplifier platform behind the B&O Sound System for the Audi A8



Bang & Olufsen and Audi recently announced a new audio sound system for the Audi A8 presenting a musical experience for luxury class cars unlike any previously achieved. The sound distribution and stereo image are perfect, no matter where you sit in the Audi A8, and the sound level matches the best high-end stereo systems for the home. The new system has been specially adapted to the conditions inside the car, providing a unique musical experience while driving.

As part of the B&O Sound System for the Audi A8 is a tailor-made ICEpower amplifier platform, which reveals a stunningly unique combination of Hi-Fi sound quality, high power and ultra compactness that breaks previous performance barriers in car audio quality and power density.


To ensure a truly unique automotive sound system for the Audi A8, a daunting list of demands for the amplification solution of the subwoofer and woofer/midrange audio had to be met. First of all it should deliver the highest audio quality with a high dynamic range and ultra-low distortion. Secondly, it should amplify 5 channels of high audio power in a total of 750W. Thirdly, it had to be extremely compact with a size less than a sheet of paper and a height of only 6.3 cm including amplifiers, power supplies, diagnostics capabilities and microprocessor control.

To meet these demands, a tailor-made amplifier platform based on the ICEpower amplifier technology was necessary. The ICEpower amplifier platform for the Audi A8 features four channels of 125W for the woofer/midrange and one channel of 250W for the subwoofer, effectively making it the primary “audio power station” in the Audi A8 automotive sound system. Thanks to the unique ICEpower technology, all audio channels deliver true Hi-Fi audio quality with a dynamic range of 115 dB and a distortion less than 0.1% at full power.

The amplifier platform also features two ICEpower DC/DC converters, a main 750W converter for the 5 power amplifiers and one powering the low level 2 amplification stages, both specifically engineered for high audio quality. The cabinet for the amplifier platform is an exclusively designed aluminium housing that measures only 26.1 x 18.7 x 6.3 cm, ensuring an ultra compact yet extremely powerful solution.

Audi and Bang & Olufsen will be presenting the new audio sound system - a world first - in the new Audi A8 at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in the autumn 2005.

Danish hi-fi and electronics specialist Bang & Olufsen has developed a state-of-the-art sound system for the flagship Audi A8, which is expected to set new standards even in the luxury segment. Audi will showcase its first vehicle with the “B & O Advanced Sound System” on board at the Frankfurt IAA Motor Show 2005. The system will be available at the end of 2005/beginning of 2006.

Innovative designs coupled with advanced technology; the highest quality materials and finish: all these factors are equally important to business partners Audi and Bang & Olufsen.

The status of the Audi A8 as the sportiest limousine in the luxury segment is based on its trend-setting styling and technology, representing the highest level of car manufacture in all areas. The aluminium Audi Space Frame body, the quattro permanent all-wheel drive and the Multi Media Interface (MMI) are just three examples of the proverbial Audi “Vorsprung durch Technik”.

Progress that the Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System has now taken to an acoustic dimension. The system, which is developed exclusively for the A8, pays heed to the actual acoustic characteristics of the car interior, such as internal space, shape and materials used. Factors including driving speed, the corresponding wind effect and friction between asphalt and tyre are also taken into account.

A perfect sound quality is achieved in the A8 with a total of fourteen active high-end loudspeakers, B&O Acoustic Lens Technology and more than 1,000 Watts of amplifier power.

Exclusively designed for the Audi A8, the loudspeaker cabinets are made from carefully processed anodised aluminium, the very same material used in the construction of the sporty luxury saloon’s body.

Active speakers, each with its own individual amplifier, are housed within the cabinets. This means that the sound properties can be adjusted accurately in accordance with the precise function of the speakers within the overall concept.

All loudspeakers are housed in closed cabinets, allowing each speaker to be controlled irrespective of where it is mounted. This elaborate technology eliminates particularly disturbing resonances.


The sound system is also music to your eyes: its design dovetails beautifully with the sporty and luxurious A8 ambience, providing it with a highly artistic feel. When the system is activated, two lens speakers automatically emerge from the dashboard, giving perfect sound to every seat in the car with precisely aligned horizontal emissions. Here, the fascination of visual technology is combined with the acoustic brilliance of the new Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System.

The "B & O Advanced Sound System" will be shown at the Frankfurt IAA Motor Show 2005, and will be available for A8 models at the end of 2005/beginning of 2006.

Developed exclusively for the A8, the system is tailored to the actual acoustic characteristics of the car interior, such as internal space, shape and materials used. Factors including driving speed, the corresponding wind resistance and friction between asphalt and tyre are also taken into account.

Perfect sound quality is achieved in the A8 through the use of a total of fourteen active high-end loudspeakers, B&O Acoustic Lens Technology and more than 1,000 Watts of amplifier power.

Each of the active speakers has its own amplifier and is housed within its own anodised aluminium loudspeaker cabinet designed specifically for the aluminium-bodied A8, allowing each speaker to be controlled irrespective of where it is mounted and effectively eliminating unwanted resonance.

The sound system is also music to the eyes: its design perfectly complements the A8 interior’s acclaimed blend of luxury, quality and technological sophistication.
