Τελικά:
It's not especially surprising that the more expensive models featuring sophisticated technology and designs are the players to beat. While it was easy to separate Marantz's DV6001 and Yamaha's DVD-S1700 from the rest, it was far more difficult to decide between the two - as the high star ratings for each suggests.
With an almost identical design, specification and price it came down to a matter of personal preference. And, in our opinion, the Marantz's more natural colour balance and all-round musical ability wins it by a split decision - although there's no doubting that the Yamaha is an equally impressive player.
In a test of budget 1080p players, Panasonic's DVD-S53 would be a clear frontrunner but it doesn't compare in this company despite being outstanding value for money. And Panasonic's DMR-EZ27 is one of the finest 1080p DVD recorders we've seen, especially with its ability to upscale digital TV broadcasts - but for films you just can't beat a standalone player.
