"LG will begin shipping its combination Blu-ray and HD DVD player, the so-called BH100 Super Multi Blue (pictured above), into the UK this May.

The model, the world’s first hybrid player, has been designed to address consumer confusion regarding the two competing HD formats. According to Daniel Aziz, marketing manager for LG’s Digital Media and Car Infotainment Group: “Everyone agrees that Blu-ray and HD DVD will revolutionise home entertainment and that consumer demand for high definition content is higher than ever before, however there is much uncertainty and confusion around which format consumers should invest in. The launch of our Super Multi Blue will remove this difficult choice. It gives viewers the freedom to watch either Blu-ray or HD DVDs without being limited to only the films available on each individual format, or being forced to buy two separate players.”

Significantly, the BH100 does not sport the HD DVD logo, and the player promises playback only for the format. This is because it lacks support for iHD. Users will not be able to access HD DVD menus or special features. “We’re being very upfront about this limitation,” says Aziz. The BH100 can playback existing DVDs, but not CDs, and can output up to 1080p. DVDs can be upscaled to 1080i. According to Aziz, the player will be sold by John Lewis and other select retailers for around 1,000 pounds. Quite how long the company will be able to hold such a lofty price point is unclear, given the rapidly falling price of dedicated HD hardware."
