Toshiba says that it aims to sell three million HD DVD players during its new financial year (ending March 2008 ). The announcement reveals a steely determination to take the fight to Blu-ray, through a variety price models and special promotions. The company also says it will take the format into unspecified “new markets.” It sold 250,000 HD DVD players during its last financial year.
Toshiba says the format will launch in Brazil in a matter of weeks, followed by Russia and Singapore.
New data indicates that the gap between the two HD formats is not as large as Blu-ray pundits would suggest. The HD DVD Promotional Group has revealed sales data that confirms that 998,059 HD DVD discs have been sold, just 2,000 short of the figure announced by the rival Blu-ray Association. In a statement, the group says “As more HD DVD titles hit the market and as prices for HD DVD hardware continue to drop below the 400 dollar mark, we’re seeing more equal week to week movie sales ratios between the formats.”
