The front driver layout uses a D'Appolito array that radiates horizontally to diffuse sound as it minimizes first reflections from the floor and ceiling, while the back includes the 10-inch rear-facing bass driver, a very large port, and a single set of high-quality binding posts. Crossed over at 80Hz, where wavelengths wrap around the speaker, the Vortex is designed to work with your rear wall while giving the impression the bass is emanating from the front of the speaker. The entire cabinet is wrapped in a "sock" of black (there may be other colors available soon) fabric, with top and bottom covers of stained wood. Albert was very emphatic that this speaker was all about performance, not cosmetics. Yes, the money went into the components, although the VR-33 is no ugly ducking. Overall, a very nice balance.

Dear Editor,
Thanks for choosing our new VR-33 speaker for your consideration. We realize that magazines are inundated with hundreds of products and that the entire high end audio market has become saturated with "me too" products that are virtually indistinguishable from each other.

Since Von Schweikert Audio is primarily an engineering company and does not focus on sales or marketing as much as other companies, it is always a joy to find that we have designed a product that has caused an extremely positive reaction to those reviewers, dealers, and customers who have had a chance to hear our new design in the release stage.

As Mr. Zurek points out, the VR-33 was designed to be a "break-through" product in sound quality, ease of placement, and price considerations. That we have used technology "inspired" by speaker systems costing up to $37,000/pr gives great confidence to those audiophiles looking for a reasonably price system that can sound like live music in their homes—without breaking the bank!

Thanks to Mr. Zurek and Editors Mr. Clark and Dr. Robinson for giving us this chance to show PF readers just what potential customers can expect when they invest in a Von Schweikert Audio speaker system!

Best regards,

Albert Von Schweikert

CEO/Chief Engineer

WHY THE VR-33 ARE TO BE PLACED CLOSE TO THE WALL

I had two design goals for the VR-33 engineering platform. The first goal was to build an extremely high performance speaker for a low price. The second goal was to build a speaker that could be placed against the wall, since we have had literally thousands of requests for this type of product. Perhaps it is the Gestalt created by the change from large-box TV sets to flat panel sets? Perhaps there are legions of people with shallow rooms that cannot use a speaker placed out into the room? Perhaps our wives' opinions are important?

As audiophiles, we have all gotten used to placing our speakers out into the room, feeling that a compromise would be made if the speakers were too close to the wall - either the depth would suffer, or the bass would "boom out" and create bad sound. However, friends, this is not a "law of physics," but a mistaken belief propagated by the simple fact that almost every speaker on the market is designed for "free- field" placement. It is quite true that a free-field design will indeed sound bad when placed against the wall, since it was not designed for that application.

The VR-33 was designed from the outset to be placed against the wall, and will actually sound worse if placed 4 or 5 feet into the room! The wall behind the speaker was factored into the sound wave projection pattern of the VR-33, which includes both the bass reproduction and transient response, as well as depth perception.

Although depth is thought to be created by placing the speakers away from the walls, this not the case - depth of field depends entirely on the recording. The beta testers who have the VR-33 will testify that this design has more depth than conventional speakers. This is the result of knowing how the speaker will behave in the room, since the common denominator will be the wall.....

We did not design a "trick" to create depth, we simply designed the VR-33 to recreate exactly what is on the recording when placed against the wall, so you must realize that the crossover design, radiation pattern, and cabinet shape all contribute to this accomplishment. Although there have been several other companies that have designed speakers to be placed in or on the wall, the VR-33 is unique in the balance of it's entire sound quality- the tremendous bass response and dynamic range are simply "icing on the cake" so to speak.

I hope that this explanation will have you thinking about how much science is involved in listening to a stereo system - a 3-D sound-field is an illusion that is magnificent and mysterious at the same time! Borrow the book from the library entitled "Psychoacoustics," written by two German scientists named Fastl and Zwicker. I have conducted research in this field for 30 years and it still amazes me how our ear/brain hearing mechanism operates - it's a fascinating subject! I will agree with the beta testers that the VR-33 has "miles" of depth, but my research simply follows in the tradition of the research of hundreds of scientists before me, including my mentor, Dr. Richard C. Heyser. Read his books on measurements and perception to learn even more about how and why we hear the effect of depth perception and image localization. Fascinating reading!

Happy Listening,
Albert Von Schweikert
