King Arthur has found his Guinevere in Astrid Berges-Frisbey

Warner Bros. and director Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes) are moving forward at a fast pace with their new take on the legendary tale of Camelot with Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur, and Deadline is reporting that European model and actress Astrid Berges-Frisbey will be playing Guinevere to Charlie ("Sons of Anarchy") Hunnam's King Arthur.

Berges-Frisbey first got attention in America in 2007 when she starred opposite Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz as the mermaid Syrena in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which grossed a billion dollars worldwide. More recently, she could be seen opposite Michael Pitt in Mike Cahill's indie I, Origins.

It's unclear where this leaves Elizabeth Olsen who was slated to play the female lead in the movie just a few weeks back, although she could be playing a different role. Either that or Berges-Frisbey has replaced her.

Jude Law takes villain role in Guy Ritchie's King Arthur epic

Jude Law has, according to a story today at Variety, signed on to play the unnamed villain at the center of Guy Ritchie's King Arthur. The trade also notes that Idris Elba, previously eyed to play a Merlin-like character, is no longer involved with what is tentatively planned to be a six film franchise.

Law previously appeared in both of Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes films. In King Arthur, he joins Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim) in the title role with Astrid Berges-Frisbey (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) set to play Guinevere.

Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur epic finds its Merlin figure in Djimon Hounsou

Principle casting on Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur appears to be nearly complete today as Variety reports that Djimon Hounsou has signed on to play the story’s Merlin-equivalent opposite Charlie Hunnam’s Arthur, Astrid Berges-Frisbey’s Guinevere and (not quite locked yet) Jude Law’s unnamed villain.

Ambitiously planned to potentially span six films, King Arthur will offer a re-imagining of Arthurian legend. Believed to have been a 6th century King, Arthur defended Britain against Saxon invaders. The key source material for the film will be Thomas Mallory’s “Le Morte d’Arthur,” published in 1485 as a compilation of French and English tales.

Idris Elba was said to have been eyeing the quasi-Merlin role earlier this year, but ended up passing on the project due to schedule commitments.

Hounsou recently appeared in Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy and can be seen coming up in films like the fantasy adventure Seventh Son, the horror thriller The Vatican Tapes, the action ensemble Furious 7 and Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming take on Edgar Rice Burrough’s Tarzan.

Knights of the Round Table finds King Arthur’s father in Eric Bana

Guy Ritchie’s Knights of the Round Table (formerly King Arthur) has added Eric Bana to its cast. According to a report today from Variety, the Deliver Us From Evil star will play Uther Pendragon, the father of Charlie Hunnam’s once and future king.

Bana, whose credits include films like Hulk, Munich and Star Trek, can next be seen in The Finest Hours opposite Ben Foster, Casey Affleck, Chris Pine and Holliday Grainger.

First official look at Charlie Hunnam in Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur

EW has released the cover for their upcoming issue, which features our first official look at Charlie Hunnam as the title monarch in Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur. Check it out below along with some additional images of Hunnam in costume!

“I think where the pitfall has often been is trying to make King Arthur bland and nice, and nice and bland,” director Guy Ritchie tells the outlet. “The two qualities make rather compatible bed companions. Unfortunately, they’re not interesting to watch. Luke Skywalker was always the most uninteresting character in Star Wars because he’s the good guy. Good guys are boring.”

“He’s a little bit rough around the edges, but he’s basically a survivor. He’s a hustler,” Hunnam says of his version of the character. “He’s a street kid. There’s definitely a harder edge to him than people would imagine. It’s sort of classic Guy Ritchie stuff.”

EW also reports that the film will dive head first into the fantasy elements, most notably with the use of giant snakes, massive war elephants, and a “monstrous viking-like creature” called The Nemesis.

Warner Bros. Pictures (via Entertainment Weekly) has released a first look at Jude Law’s King Arthur villain Vortigern from Guy Ritchie‘s revisionist take on Arthurian lore. Vortigern is described as possessing magical abilities, as well as being the murderer of Arthur’s father, Uther Pendragon (Eric Bana), and usurper of the throne.
