Audio Technica AT-LPW40 and AT-LPW30: προσιτά Πικάπ

Όχι ένα αλλά δύο νέα πικάπ παρουσίασε η Audio Technica με βάση ξύλο.

Πρόκειται για τα μοντέλα AT-LPW40WN και AT-LPW30TK που χρησιμοποιούν HDR (και όχι MDF) βάση από ξύλο. Το μεγάλο μοντέλο είναι το AT-LPW40WN που έχει φινίρισμα σκούρας καρυδιάς, ενώ το μικρότερο AT-LP30WN έχει φινίρισμα από τικ.

Τα πλατό είναι από αλουμίνιο και έχουν ελαστικά ματ στο επάνω μέρος.



Το AT-LPW40WN έχει σύστημα διατήρησης των στροφών 33 1/3 και 45 για ακρίβεια, ενώ ο βραχίονας είναι από ανθρακονήματα ευθύγραμμος. Το AT-LPW30TK έχει ευθύγραμμο βραχίονα από αλουμίνιο.

Και τα δύο πικάπ έχουν στο βραχίονα υδραυλική απόσβεση στην ανύψωση καθώς και ρύθμιση με αντίβαρα και anti-skating. Tα πικάπ έρχονται με ενσωματωμένο phono stager, που βγαίνει off με διακόπτη. Επίσης έρχονται εξοπλισμένα με κεφαλή ΜΜ από την σειρά VM95 της εταιρίας. Το AT-LPW40WN έχει την ελλειπτική VM95E κεφαλή, ενώ το AT-LPW30TK την κωνικής ακίδας VM95C.

Malachi’s First MC Cartridge: Ortofon’s Quintet Black S . . .

Not only does the Quintet Black S enhance the sound of excellent recordings, it also reveals flaws in poor ones. When I first heard Mobile Fidelity’s One-Step remaster of Simon & Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water (45rpm 2LP, MFSL UD1S 2-0004), I listened with the Elys 2 and the built-in MM phono stage of my Onkyo TX-8260 integrated stereo amp/receiver. I thought the record sounded fantastic. However, system upgrades changed my opinion: using the UltraPhono and the Quintet Black S, I can attest that this reissue only has surface-level detail and is spatially flat with shallow bass, clear yet buried acoustic guitars, and lifeless presentations of the title track, “So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright,” and “The Boxer.” Even “Cecilia,” with the extreme clarity of its drums, sounds as if it’s trying too hard to cover up a poor-sounding tape source. According to engineer and producer Roy Halee, the first-generation master was lost in 1970, and the details of the tape currently in use are unknown. I respect MoFi’s effort to extract as much sonic information as possible from the source, but the existing source simply isn’t very good. Given that Mobile Fidelity is careful to not label secondary source material releases as “Original Master Recordings”, I assume a later generation tape was labeled as the “original master” and given them to use.

Conclusion

Setup may be difficult and time-consuming for some, but the Ortofon MC Quintet Black S offers a detailed and fairly neutral sound for a more than reasonable price tag of $999. It tracks like a champ, and the simple and clean look will visually match most turntables and tonearms. Most importantly, the cartridge appropriately represents the music within the grooves, and is an excellent entry into the moving coil world for those who can afford it. Despite the minor issues I had with the Quintet Black S, I highly recommend it to those looking for a great all-rounder cartridge in this price range.

Προϊόντα μιας ιδιόμορφης εταιρικής συνεργασίας μεταξύ ενός μεγάλης κλίμακας κατασκευαστή βιομηχανικών προϊόντων, της Dai-Ichi Shoji και ενός μικρού, εξειδικευμένου κατασκευαστή audio, της Excel Sound, οι κεφαλές etsuro-urushi είναι ένα από τα ορόσημα του Ιαπωνικού περφεξιονισμού, σε ό,τι αφορά τον αναλογικό ήχο

Η σειρά etsuro-urushi περιλαμβάνει τρεις κεφαλές, την κορυφαία Gold και δύο ακόμη μοντέλα, την Bordeaux και την Cobalt. The core part of the transformer has an EX Type 78% permalloy core installed, which has superb inductance properties, creating a wide performance range. Likewise, the shield case utilizes the same material in order to decrease the noise components. Sorane ZA-12 tonearm . . .

The ZA-12 resembles no other contemporary tonearm I've seen; if anything, it brings to mind the arms produced in the 1950s and '60s by the now-defunct Gray Research Co., most of whose products were unapologetically big and blocky instead of lissome and lean. Viewed from above, from its bearing housing forward, the ZA-12 is a single, long, continuous rectangle of aluminum, unbroken by even a headshell: Two slots for cartridge-mount bolts are machined at an angle of precisely 16.5° to the arm's axis, thus creating the necessary offset, and a slender finger lift is neatly fitted with a machine screw.

Good overall tonal balance—great tonal balance, really—was also the order of the day when I played my nice original copy of Doc Watson's third album, from 1966: Southbound (LP, Vanguard VSD 79213). Double bass, played here by Russ Savakus, again sounded just right: tonally richer and more plummy than on the Grisman record, but no less tight and quick, with superb pitch definition and in fine balance with everything else. Watson's guitar lines—especially his quick runs in "Call of the Road"—sounded wonderful, as did his gorgeous baritone voice: spatially front and center, and imbued with just the right amount of natural texture. Perfect playback of a perfect record, one that I did not want to end.

Bass was ungenerous with this combination: Throughout the Denny LP, Pat Donaldson's electric bass was thin and lacking in oomph, and the same was true of the double bass on various Doc Watson albums. (The EMT-Sorane combination had sounded so wonderful on Southbound that it triggered a Watson mini-binge.)

Editor: Thank you, Art Dudley, for your thought-provoking review of the Sorane ZA-12. It is a design that eschews complications, a product with quality materials and precision, at a fair price.

Complications in wristwatches are "cool" and add value. Complications in tonearms usually detract from the sound. The ZA-12 is simple for a reason. We didn't want to compromise the arm for compromised cartridges. If your cartridge needs azimuth adjustment, send it back for another, or to The Soundsmith for repair.

The leads are extra-long for retermination purposes. It is possible to use the arm for years without damaging the leads. On the other hand, people get frustrated and they have accidents. When I mount a cartridge, I take the leads, make a loop, then connect them to the cartridge.

The problem with finding an effective mass for the arm has been the quite wide variation in cartridge compliance, specifically within the same cartridge line. I did note that the EMT's and DL-103's resonances fell within the recommended range of 7–12Hz. That falls below virtually all recorded musical material.

We now have a new tonearm lifter that allows an additional 4mm of clearance at the back of the arm, which gave me much more room for adjustment on my Thorens TD 124 and Denon DP80 (both "short" turntables). It solves the problem we both had on our Thorenses, and makes life easier.

I hope you will throw a suitably obnoxious, really cheap, low-compliance cartridge on there, like the Shure SC35. Great arms excel with noisy/obnoxious cartridges like that. Hopefully, you'll get the chance.

I feel that we have achieved our goals with this product, and that it presents a unique blend of value, performance, looks, feel, and sound. I really appreciate your thoughtful commentary
