Why analog sounds better (limits of digital)

At my peril perhaps, I'd like to comment on the earler thread on why analog sounds better. The thread didn't go into specifics.

* The DVD/SACD storage medium is problematic: If you think dragging a minute needle across a vinyl surface is bad, think of digital! The data has to be read from a spinning, bumpy, dirty surface by a laser, which has to constantly adjust its focus, as it is moved across the disc. Going to denser and denser formats DVD/SACD increases the mechanical problems. Greater mechanical problems lead to less integrity of the read data. They really have to implement some way to read the data into memory, do error checking, then re-read into memory if the data does not pass error checking, and only pass it to the DA converter when the data is good, as in computers. But then again, if they do this, I bet many, many discs will be unplayable and will be returned by consumers. So I won't hold my breath on this one! (We really need semiconductor memory sticks... or crystal/holographic memory... at that stage, we can revisit digital audio.)
* Low sampling rate: Doug Sax said in an interview that the sampling rate for digital was too low. He heard the current standard and an experimental one set at 2 MHz. The 2 MHz one sounded better.
* Limits in the sampling rate forces the D/A converter to filter the sound between 20 Hz and 20KHz. But KEF (the speaker manufacturers) proved many, many years ago (before digital) that a playback system really needs to start at 0Hz and go well above 20 KHz -- just like real musical instruments.
* Poor error correction: Noise in the circuit will cause digits to be misread -- there's no way to avoid this. Computers deal with this problem with error checking -- the CPU or drive controller rejects a digital word, and has it reread (from your hard disk) or resent (if we're dealing with the internet or a device on the network). In digital audio, there's error checking but no resenting. The D/A converter will just play the previous word again. So what starts out as "ABCD" on the CD will be played as "ABBD" into the D/A converter. Somebody should measure the drop out rate. Interestingly, Naim Audio puts the D/A converter right next to the laser (less than 1 cm signal path) to minimize this error.
* Digital is supposed to have a wider dynamic range: In practice, the dynamic range has to be limited in CDs to reduce problems for the D/A converter. LP has a wider dynamic range. There's also a subjective factor. We don't hear loudness as an absolute measure, but we differences in loudness. LP plays quieter, and is then able to present contrasts better. Spectral and Reference Recordings attempted to solve this with HDCD -- which does sound better than standard CDs. But there's a trace of character... it's impossible to apply shaping algorithms and stay neutral at the same time.
* Trust your ears: If it doesn't sound right, its because there are other new, unknown problems. CD dampers, over sampling, green marker pens, followed by Krell's use of green LEDs in the disc bay, the realization that the S/PDIF interface was bad and that one should go with the coax, and then $1000 coax cables, and then jitter correction, have all reflected limitations of digital devices. Then came the realization that digital circuits dirty up the mains and cause problems for amps -- vide the need for things like MonsterCable's mains strip. And the discovery that CDs supply a lot of unnecessary, confusing info to the D/A converter -- vide the Genesis Digital Lens. Given the resulting sound that we are left with, I think there are still a few more, waiting to be discovered. When discovered, I hope the person makes some money off the discovery with yet another gadget to improve the sound of digital audio! The fact is, whenever one sees many after-market gadgets, there's something wrong with the basic implementation!

In the end no system is perfect... One has to see the overall execution and judge the results. The LP is not perfect, just as digital is not perfect. But so far, on the balance, I think the LP outperforms digital in capturing music.

Πρεπει επειγοντως να παρουμε τηλ. η να στειλουμε mail στην εταιρεια που κατεβασαμε τα HD και να τους πουμε την χιλιομετρικη αποσταση που εκαναν τα δεδομενα να κατεβουν και να μας ελθουν ωστε να υπολογισουν το αναλογο jitter που χαθηκε στην διαδρομη.!!!
Επισης να δουμε τι καιρο εκανε τοτε μην και τυχον χαθηκαν καμια 300αρια δραμια κατα το κατεβασμα γιατι μπορει να φυσαγε---150 δραμια,μπορει να εβρεχε--250 δραμια--μπορει να ειχε καυλες ο server οποτε οπως ηταν αναψοκοκκινισμενος να χαθηκαν και απο κει καποια δραμια!!!!
Αν βρουμε ποσα jiterria χαθηκαν να μας στειλουν τα ευρα πισω!!!!!!!!!!

Πάντως με τον Τσάρο, καταλλήξαμε στο συμπέρασμα ότι το Jitter δεν ειναι τόσο τραγικό...

Το πολύ πολύ να ακούς το ρεφρέν πριν το κουπλέ αν δεν φτάσουν τα ντάτα με την σωστή σειρά...
