The two commonest frequency weightings are the A-weighting and the C-weighting. They
are based upon the frequency responses of the 40 phon and 100phon equal-loudness level
contours, respectively. Sound pressure level measurements taken with the A-weighting
switched on are quoted in dB(A) and those with the C-weighting switched on are quoted in
dB(C). If no frequency weighting is switched on, the sound level meter has a flat (or linear)
frequency response and the sound pressure level is quoted as dB or dB(Lin) - soon to be
written dB(Z) - to make it really clear that there is no frequency weighting.
The graph and table below show by how many decibel the sensitivity of the sound level
meter is altered at each frequency for the A-, C- and Z- weightings. On each weighting, the sensitivity of the meter is not altered at 1 kHz.
Frequency weightings A and C (based on the 40 and 100 phon equal loudness contours respectively)
Z weighting is a flat frequency response between 10Hz and 20kHz ±1.5dB
