Full HDTV support
with the new predefined resolutions 720p, 1080i and 1080p at 50/60Hz. This feature is based on “true” scaling without horizontal interpolation in the output in conjunction with a switchable HDTV sync (bi-level / tri-level)!
100% digital signal procesing
using the two SDI inputs and the HDCP conform digital DVI output. cinemateq here uses the known mastering studio standard SDI, the only digital standard input signal able to transfer a 1:1 rendition of the video data stream provided by either DVD or digital TV as the basis for a perfect scaling and picture optimization is a digital input signal free from mistakes and any upfront conversions, i.e. the analog/digital or digital/analog conversions which reduce quality are no longer required and the signal path is shortened. In this way, the image data can be scaled without bandwidth restrictions as well as optimized and even distributed digitally via the DVI interface of the picture optimizer plus SDI, or analogue via the RGB or YUV output. The result of this "full digital chain" is a clear increase in the brilliance of the playback: More sharpness, flicker-free pictures and complete data information for an error-free picture in quasi digital perfection.

The mathematically 100% perfect scaling
The complete rework of the cinemateq scaling technology ensures the mathematically 100% correct scaling of all input signals to each and every output resolution. So the best possible result is obtained in the context of the customary to the market standards. Result is a pixel exact output picture with maximal granularity, matching international norms in all aspects.
22 predefined output resolutions for both PAL & NTSC
Nine resolutions can be selected directly via remote control, 13 further ones via navigation in the on screen menu. Each resolution is provided for both PAL and NTSC; in total 2 times 22 = 44 resolutions. (see resolution table). On top there are in total 4 individually programmable „custom resolutions“.
Maximum resolutions
depend on the framerate used. E.g. quadrupling with 50/72 Hz, wide-XGA with 100/90 Hz, DILA with 75/72 Hz or 1080p with 50/60 Hz (frame rate PAL/NTSC).
Minimum picture cut off
Based on the new scaling procedure the picture can now be distributed with its full displayable content, i.e. maximum overscan. The so called „pixel cropping“ is reduced to a minimum.
Individual parameter configuration for all inputs
Each of the eight inputs of the picture optimizer plus can be individually configured to the needs of the connected video source for all parameters. Besides the picture parameters (e.g. brightness) and the picture position adjustment (input alignment) also TV-Mode, upper mentioned overscan and aspect ratio conversion can be preadjusted for each input separately. So the circumstantial manual adjustment if e.g. changing from the 4:3 TV picture of a Sat box to 16:9 rendition of a DVD player is no longer necessary.
Video switcher with auto input function
Besides the optimization the cinemateq picture optimizer plus II SDI offers a professional high frequency 8 sources video switcher. The automatic detection of input signals always switches to the video source with the highest priority. Manual selection of input channels can be easily performed using the IR remote control per direct access buttons or via RS-232 port and a control system.
Parallel output of two sources
In standard mode the device provides the same signal at all outputs, so up to three displays can be feeded with the optimized video signal at a time. In „parallel mode“ one output can be directly switched to a bypass input, so two different signal types can be distributed separately from each other.
Firmware upgrade via RS-232 port
The firmware (software) for the unit can be easily updated with a serial cable and a PC via the RS-232 interface. The latest versions of the firmware are available for downloading from the internet. More information on that and the latest firmware version can be found here.
Functions
"custom resolution"
Not all projectors and plasma screens work according to international signal standards. In order to anyway have the possibility to address each device optimally or to generate „exotic“ display resolutions, the picture optimizer plus II SDI offers 2 individually adjustable „custom resolutions“ for both PAL and NTSC signals. These „custom resolutions“ can be adjusted individually and pixel exact to the demands of connected displaying devices. Via a so called „copy from fix“ function all predefined resolutions can be loaded into one of the four custom resolutions and if necessary corrected / modified afterwards. So the picture optimizer plus II SDI can be optimally adjusted and perfectly synchronized to each and every display available on the market.

"frame rate conversion"
The picture optimizer plus II SDI can flexibly change and distribute standard frame rates of 50/60 Hz for PAL/NTSC signals using its „frame rate conversion“-function between 48 Hz and 120 Hz. – depending on the selected output resolution. This function eliminates disturbing flickering and synchronisation problems of digital displays – a calm, high resolution picture is guaranteed.
"aspect ratio conversion"
This function uses five setting options to convert various input formats into the required output formats. This distinguishes them from the "fixed format conversion" (4:3 or 16:9 output) of DVD players. Non-anamorphic letterbox sources for example can therefore be changed to an anamorphic 16:9 format or display an anamorphic 16:9 format on a 4:3 screen. This means that the available picture field of the playback unit is always used optimally - "black bars" and "cut-off displays" or a "small picture are a thing of the past. The following conversions can be directly performed using the IR remote control:
Pass Through (1:1 no format change)
Horizontal -33% (4:3 frame =>16:9 anamorph)
Vertical +33% (4:3 and 16:9 letterbox =>16:9 anamorph)
Vertical -33% (16:9 anamorph => 4:3 frame or letterbox)
Horizontal -33% & vertical -33% (4:3 „Window-Boxing“ to 16:9)
"aspect ratio correction"
Several displays do not correspond to international standards for picture format rendition, they are using a proprietary procedure, that is likely to cause problems in conjunction with optimized video signals. In exceptional cases there can appear geometrical errors (e.g. distortion or upsetting) due to the picture optimizer aspect ratio conversion if using the standard predefined settings. Activating the function „aspect ratio correction“ (aspect V correction) alike errors can simply be eliminated by adjusting the conversion factor.
"electronic lensshift"
This function provides real electronic lensshift and has been designed especially for owners of projectors in conjunction with a masked sreen.
With a Letterbox rendition (e.g. in 21:9 format) the black bars can be „removed“. This result is reached by a vertical movement of the picture content towards the upper or lower picture edge, so the black bar is outside the visible window. Masked screens can then be adjusted, so only active picture content without bars is visible. The function can be activated using the remote control.
"overscan"
As full picture content is displayed without cut off due to the improved scaling procedure, now there are possibly also shown errors on the picture edge - simply cut off until now - when watching “inferior” signals. With the new function overscan there is now a possiblity to variably “zoom into the picture” from 99% to 70%, i.e. “cut off” 1% up to 30% on the picture edge and adjust the remaining picture content to the full screen view. Especially if watching TV- or „old“ video material this guarantees an optimum representation of picture contents.
"TV-Mode"
This optimisation procedure is exclusively intended for video signals in the so-called "camera-" or "video-mode". This refers to images recorded with digital video technology such as TV signals from sports broadcasts, concerts, TV series etc. The reproduction problems typical here, such as fringed edges and pixelling with moving objects are significantly reduced with the manually selectable "TV-mode".

In order to achieve an optimum concerning picture and colour rendition, individual adjustments of the input signal are mandatory. The following parameters can be modified for each input separately:

"sharpness adjustment"
An undesired side effect of the line multiplier procedure is the "softer" rendition of the video signal, i.e. a certain "lack of focus" within the picture. The image sharpness function based on a state-of-the-art digital enchancer chip compensates for this side effect and provides a perfect and extremly sharp image reproduction.
"horizontal & vertical image size and positioning"
This function allows the output signal to be readjusted in respect to image size and image position. In this way minor "peculiarities" of many playback units can be eliminated and a "perfect" video image reproduced.
"noise reduction"
Some video sources produce an "impure" video signal with varying types of interference such as flickering or random vibration ("snow") in the picture. It is mainly analogue signals such as TV, video recorder or even older DVDs that are affected by this. The noise filter function reduces this interference and hence increases the playback quality tremendously.
"RGB Color Correction"
The picture optimizer plus II SDI can correct the color rendition of a displaying device connected using a RGB signal format by its “RGB Color Correction“ function. With this function you can both adjust the intensity of the basic colors red, green and blue and modify the Gamma curve for each single basic color.
"RGB Luminance Room"
The "RGB Luminance Room" function a RGB signal format (RGB HV, RGBs, RGsB, DVI) can be displayed in two different brightness spectrums:
- SMPTE standard: The SMPTE standard equals the contrast range of 16 -235 used by DVD. Therefore also the so called “underblack levels“ (“darker than black“) can be shown.
- VESA standard: With the VESA standard settings the contrast range mostly used by DVD is “spread” from 16 -235 to 0 -255. This enables the signal to be transmitted with much higher contrast dynamics. The “underblack levels“ are no longer visible.
"fixed presets"
With the function „fixed presets“ all values adjusted can be saved in 3 different versions. As not only brightness- or colour saturation values, but also picture position, resolution- and format settings are saved, divers configurations can be deposited in these presets (e.g. for two connected video sources).
"RS-232 output commands"
With this function the picture optimizer plus can switch on and off displays with integrated RS-232 control interfaces. Both when switching on and off the picture optimizer plus sends serial command codes through its RS-232 interface in order to control connected displays. So only the picture optimizer plus needs to be controlled – you can simply “forget” the display unit’s remote control.

in- & outputs
The cinemateq picture optimizer plus II SDI in total offers 10 inputs and 4 outputs in all common format and interface variations. In order to comply with European demands SCART inputs have also been integrated

This ensures the coverage of all common variation possibilities for sources and displays and highest possible flexibility. The combination of all inputs with the four outputs allows even special conversions such as YUV to RGB or vice versa.
operation using remote control and RS-232 port
The configuration of all parameters and the operation of all functions is performed with the IR remote control delivered with the device. Next to predefined function access buttons for the most important commands everything else is controlled using cursor buttons. In addition to that the device can be connected to a professional control system (such as AMX) via a 9-pin Mini-D RS232 port.
on screen menu & graphical display
For all operating and configuration steps both the graphical display and the on screen menu can be used as a control media. This „double display solution“ always ensures a comfortable communication with the device, even if no video signal is available for the on screen menu or the device itself is not easy to access, e.g. when integrated into a rack.
