Rountree Acoustics out of Cambridge, England has released their new OmniMon Model 1 full-range floor standing two-way loudspeaker. The Model 1 is omni-directional as you probably guessed from the name and features a modified Scanspeak Revelator for the bass/midrange, and a true transformer-coupled aluminum ribbon for the highs.

The Model 1's woofer is inverted on the top of the cabinet "to provide 360º radiation without the need for the reflectors or lenses," something you don't see very often. Rountree also attributes numerous acoustical benefits to the driver being inverted and used in a transmission line configuration.


The wood-free enclosure is the most interesting part of this speaker though. Rountree used a low mass composite material with a hard foam core and treated paper skins to get the enclosure weight under 4 lbs., and that's including the 16 internal braces. The cabinet was designed so that the bracing acts as a suspension system to make the cabinet vibrations "so transitory and well-behaved as to be unperceived." Rountree also mentioned that a similar wood enclosure they tested weighed nearly 50 lbs.

Another interesting part of the cabinet does add a bit more weight though, the solid steel supporting pillar that goes through the center of the cabinet and connects the woofer directly to the stainless steel plinth mounted to the bottom of the cabinet. The collar you can see on the ribbon serves to de-couple it from the rest of the system by counterbalancing it.

Rountree also mentions that the Model 1's will perform excellent with most tube amplifiers, as they do not need much power to get loud.

The Rountree OmniMon 1 is priced at approximately $9,900 (£5,000 +VAT).

"Είναι σαφές ότι η Rountree Acoustics προσπαθεί με το OmniMon1 να συγκεράσει τα θετικά χαρακτηριστικά ενός διπόλου με αυτά ενός κατευθυντικού ηχείου: Χρησιμοποιεί για τις συχνότητες κάτω από τα 2.3kHz ένα μιντ/γούφερ 180 χιλιοστών της Scanspeak ενώ το υπόλοιπο φάσμα αναπαράγεται από ένα τουίτερ ribbon 9x63 χιλιοστών.

Μέχρι εδώ, το OmniMon1 δεν είναι κάτι εξαιρετικά ασυνήθιστο.
Ωστόσο είναι οι υπόλοιπες σχεδιαστικές επιλογές που το κάνουν ενδιαφέρον. Το γούφερ είναι τοποθετημένο ακριβώς πίσω από το τουίτερ (ώστε να μειώνονται οι πραγματικές διαστάσεις της πηγής) και ακτινοβολεί προς το δάπεδο μέσω μιας ευθύγραμμης (χωρίς δηλαδή αναδιπλώσεις) γραμμή μεταφοράς που εκτονώνεται στην βάση. Ο παντοκατευθυντικός χαρακτήρας της ακτινοβολίας εξασφαλίζεται από το πίσω μέρος του Scanspeak το οποίο και είναι ελεύθερο.

Η καμπίνα του ηχείου (με ύψος κάτι λιγότερο από μέτρο) είναι κατασκευασμένη από ένα σύνθετο υλικό που αποτελείται από δύο επιφάνειες επεξεργασμένου χαρτιού ανάμεσα στις οποίες υπάρχει αφρώδες υλικό. Αν αυτό ακούγεται “ελαφρύ” έχετε δίκιο: Σκέτη η καμπίνα ζυγίζει 1.8 κιλά (!) μαζί με τις 16 εγκάρσιες ενισχύσεις της. Παρόλα αυτά το ηχείο είναι αρκετά βαρύ, ζυγίζοντας 48 κιλά. Υπεύθυνη για το βάρος αυτό είναι η μάζα του συστήματος στήριξης του ίδιου του γούφερ, ένας άξονας διαμέτρου 50 χιλιοστών και βάρους 16 κιλών που συνδέει το μεγάφωνο με μια βαριά βάση (22kg) εξασφαλίζοντας, κατά την εταιρία, πολύ μεγαλύτερη ακαμψία από ότι οι συμβατικές λύσεις. Τα φίλτρα που χρησιμοποιούνται είναι τοποθετημένα σε εξωτερικό σασί και είναι πρώτης τάξης για το γούφερ και τρίτης για το ribbon, η δε σύνδεσή του με τα μεγάφωνα γίνεται μέσω βυσμάτων Speakon.

Το OmniMon1 έχει ευαισθησία 85dB/2.83Vrns/1m, ελάχιστη αντίσταση 5.2Ω και απόκριση 30Hz-40kHz (ανηχοϊκά μετρημένο). Για κάποια τμήματά του η Rountree έχει υποβάλλει αιτήματα για δίπλωμα ευρεσιτεχνίας."
