Merrill-Williams Audio Announces The R.E.A.L. 101.3 Turntable

Merrill-Williams Audio LLC of Memphis, Tennesseejust introduced the latest version of its celebrated R.E.A.L. turntable, the model 101.3. The R.E.A.L. 101.3 retains the essential elements of the 101 and 101.2 models while adding fundamental improvements.

. . . The plinth consists of rubber elastomer sandwiched with phenolic (hence Rubber Elastomer Acoustic Laminate). All sources of vibration (motor, platter, bearing, and tonearm) are attached only to the elastomer, and each is isolated from the others in such a way that none is allowed to transmit vibration through the laminate. . . .

Also retained are the 101.2's microprocessor-controlled motor drive with built-in speed strobe, its energy-rejecting elastomer feet, and its sophisticated record-clamping system, which consists of a center weight (also energy-rejecting) and periphery ring. The design of the R.E.A.L. turntable is the recipient of one of only two U.S. patents granted to a turntable (#8,406,122 B2), and the first since 1958. . .

Phono Loco Coming From Sutherland Engineering

. . . As with a few others on the market the Phono Loco requires a balanced signal from the cartridge and an XLR terminated phono cable. Now, cartridges are inherently "balanced", with no reference to ground but some tone arm manufacturers, Rega for one, ties ground to the RCA plug's outer ring so an RCA to XLR adapter will not work but others that separate ground (SME's DIN connector among others) can be used with an adapter and Sutherland supplies one but only for use until you can get a replacement cable or have your arm re-wired if necessary . . .

Zu DL-103 Mk.II phono cartridge




. . . Zu Audio's Zu/DL-103 Mk.II ($459), which aims to enhance further still the performance of the original Denon and the first Zu mod. It does this in a couple of ways: For the new Zu, the company's precision-machined aircraft-aluminum body has been reshaped in a manner claimed to further prevent unwanted resonances, and at the same time to ensure even better contact with the motor within. (A side benefit of the new shape: the stylus guard supplied with the stock Denon cartridge fits it to a T, whereas Zu's previous cartridge body did not.) The Mk.II's body is also hard-anodized in a manner similar to many tonearm headshells in common use: Zu suggests that this can help avoid mechanical impedance reflections and mismatches between tonearm and cartridge. Finally, the high-metal-content epoxy used to bond Denon's motor to Zu's body is more advanced than that used for the first Zu/DL-103

The distinctions I did hear between MusiKraft's and Zu's takes on the DL-103 formula were slight, and became apparent only after I made an effort to listen for such things—all the while, the very musical Denon, in both of its borrowed bodies, just wanted to hold my attention with momentum and clarity of line and touch and tone. And I pretty much went along with it. Yes, I do think the MusiKraft was more capable of sounding taut, the Zu of sounding colorful. From there, it was a bit of a toss-up: both were brilliantly well crafted and solidly recommendable . . .

. . . εδώ θα τονίσω πως γενικά όλες οι grado διαβάζουν και αναπαράγουν καλύτερα στο κατώτατο όριο προτεινόμενου βάρους ανάγνωσης δηλ 1,5g και με αρνητικό vta . . . πολλοί αντ΄ αυτού βάζουν 1,8g και 0 vta φέρνοντας ( μπακαλίστικα ) το vta στην σωστή του θέση ( μιάς και είναι αρκετά ενδοτικές ) , αλλά με λάθος βάρος ανάγνωσης
Θα διαφωνησω, Προσωπκα (στο δικο μου συστημα) ΟΛΕΣ οι Grado (από την Black μεχρι και τη Statement) "παιζουν" καλυτερα στα 1,7 ~ 1,8 γραμμαρια και με VTA αν όχι καθετα τοτε 1~2 μοιρες πισω.

Jico Ιαπωνική κεφαλή




Εκεί στην Ιαπωνία, στην χώρα των μηχανών ακριβείας, υπάρχει ένας κατασκευαστής κεφαλών με την ονομασία Jico. Ανάμεσα στην γκάμα που έχει, ξεχωρίζει η νέα κεφαλή Seto Hori που είναι κινητού πηνίου MC υψηλής εξόδου 2mV.

To κέλυφος από φυσικό ξύλο και υπάρχει διακόσμηση, κάτι σαν καρέ -πολυεδρικό- υλικό που προέρχεται από πολυετή ερευνά και ονομάζεται δε Setο. Αυτό είναι χυτό υψηλού συντελεστή συρρίκνωσης και η διάρκεια ζωής είναι τρεις φορές περισσότερο από μια συνηθισμένη κεφαλή. Στην στην άκρη έχει διαμάντι micro ridge και το στέλεχος είναι από ορυκτό βόριο.

Το συνολικό βάρος της κεφαλής είναι 19 γραμμάρια.

Το ρυθμησα με ακουστικα οποτε με καθε αλλαγη η διαφορα ηταν αμεσα αισθητη!

For those vinyl music listeners who don’t enjoy cleaning records or just want someone else to do a better job, there is Perfect Vinyl Forever. The service costs $5 (Ultra Deep Process) or $8 (Archival Process) per record for cleaning. Briefly, the difference involves additional steps with enzymatic soaking and vacuum extraction for dirty and/or used records with the archival process. Both processes involve ultrasonic deep cleaning, ultrasonic rinse, HEPA-filtered warm-air drying, and a static-free inner sleeve. There are drop-off points in certain locations around the country. The company also has prepaid and prepackaged shipping boxes (available for a fee) that are sent to your home; records can be carefully and safely placed in the application-specific packaging and mailed out for cleaning. . . . The AT-ART1000's base is machined from titanium and the rest of its body from aluminum, topped with a plastic piece claimed to confer a degree of damping. Despite having coils that lack iron cores, the A-T's output is a low but not crazy-low 0.2mV. Its coil resistance is 3 ohms, its compliance a lowish 12x10–6 cm/dyne, and its stylus is ground with a line-contact profile. Its well-designed clear-plastic stylus guard protects all of the cartridge's fragile moving parts, yet can remain snugly in place as you install or undo the cartridge-mounting bolts. The distance between the stylus tip and the line intersecting the cartridge's mounting bolts is 9.5mm, which was once nearly a standard spec . . .





. . . If, under the Audio-Technica's stylus, the Brahms sounded like a different recording, it was surely not a different performance: with its clearer portrayal of playing techniques, of sheer humanness, the A-T assured me that playing encrypted in the groove had evinced no less insight, taste, judgment, and pure physical talent than before. Based on my earlier experience with the Tzar DST, I expected a better sense of touch from the strings, and that I certainly heard. What I hadn't expected was how much better a sense of clarinetist Alfred Boskovsky's breathing and tonguing techniques the A-T now provided. Legato phrases were more so—something as easy to enjoy as to hear . . .





. . . To my way of thinking, and notwithstanding the Arché's high price, that's high praise. To achieve such adjustability and versatility with no sonic penalty is a noteworthy accomplishment, and I enthusiastically recommend the Arché to phonophiles on my side of the great divide.

SAEC Again Producing Classic Double Knife-Edge Bearing Tone Arm

After a more than 30 year absence SAEC's double knife-edged bearing tone arm is once again in production and will be available through DS Exports, DS Audio's new export division. DS Audio, of course manufactures a line of "optical" cartridges and dedicated phono preamplifiers.
The new SAEC WE-4700 arm is constructed one at a time by skilled technicians. The double knife-edges are manufactured using state-of-the art machining technology with each edge then hand-finished. The press release did not specify effective length or any of the other key specs but those should be available soon. The price in America will be between $8500 and $9500.
