Matt Reeves Directing Cloverfield Sequel and The Invisible Woman

We mentioned it briefly before, but now it looks like it is actually going to happen - Cloverfield 2 is officially in the works. Cloverfield's director Matt Reeves (above, holding the camera) is apparently in early talks with Paramount about directing a sequel and also has The Invisible Woman on his slate as well. Details about a possible sequel are very unknown, but what is known is that Cloverfield has brought in about $66 million at the box office on a $25 million budget. And anything that succesful usually has a sequel greenlit immediately.

Matt's other project, The Invisible Woman, has been set up at GreeneStreet Films. The film is a Hitchcock-style thriller that probes the mind of a former beauty queen who turns to a life of crime to protect her family. As far as I can tell, this has no relation to H.G.Wells' Invisible Man story. GreeneStreet's John Penotti compliments Reeves' script for The Invisible Woman, which Reeves wrote as well, saying, "Matt has created a truly original and compelling character and story."

As for the timing of both Cloverfield 2 and The Invisible Woman, it seems like Paramount is really pushing for Cloverfield 2 to head into production as soon as possible. Variety states that there is a "good chance the sequel will be Reeves' next film", which he will then follow-up with The Invisible Woman afterwards. The outcome depends on how quickly Paramount can negotiate a deal with Reeves, producer J.J. Abrams and writer Drew Goddard for a sequel.

Josh Brolin is the New Terminator?

This rumor was almost too good to be true, and almost too unconfirmed to post, but alas, everyone is jumping on it like a treasure map in an Indiana Jones movie, so why not? In an interview at The Two-One-Three, director McG talked quite at length about his upcoming film Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. If you remember back in October last year, McG was first rumored and later confirmed as the director on the new Terminator film, something which I wasn't too happy about. Now McG drops a hint at who might be playing the Terminator this time around - Josh Brolin.

First things first, McG clears up the rumor about Christian Bale playing John Connor, which had been said to be a smaller role in the film. Not true, as McG confirms. "John Connor's a major player in it - Christian Bale's playing that part."

Then as a final kicker, he's asked about who his "dream Terminator" would be, since an actual actor hasn't signed on the dotted line and they're still "in the process of casting." But here's where a subtle hint could go a long ways. "And there's guys out there like Russell Crowe and Eric Bana, bring a good physicality, they do what they do, but I don't know if they're exactly right at the end of the day. (Smiles) Josh Brolin is a very exciting actor - we'll see."

If we're to take that "wink" correctly, it could be Josh Brolin who is taking on the job as the new Terminator. Or at least, that's maybe who McG really wants and is really pushing for. Don't take this as solid evidence and don't take it as anything real until it's officially confirmed, which might not be for a while. However, this is a big point of discussion. Is Josh Brolin a good choice? Before you go on any further comparing the rather wimpy Brolin to Arnold Schwarzenegger, let's see what McG has to say about the difference in the plot and setting of this Terminator from the last three.

McG was questioned where this fits in, and described it's exact placement in the franchise. "This is the space between; this is post Judgment day. So there really is no continuation, you know what I mean? Its sort of a different animal, whereas the first two pictures on this thing are Terminators from the future, this picture takes place in 2019."

Rob Zombie Directing Conan Remake!

According to BloodyDisgusting Rob Zombie has been in talks to direct the upcoming Conan Remake / Reboot / Spin off. I love Rob Zombies movies but wow what a difference from his past films. I see a very bloody and intense movie coming if Rob Zombie sits in the directors chair. Does anyone else remember when Zombie went on a rant about remakes? Then he did Halloween and now Conan. Talk about a major about face. Dont get me wrong I love Rob's work its just an interesting side note.

You will recall alot of very talented people were working on the film while it was with Warner Brothers including the Wachowski Brothers, Oliver Stone and Robert Rodriquez. Now that the project is with New Line hopeully it will get further then just a script or two! "Conan" tells the story of a wandering warrior who would conquer foes (and women) as a thief, pirate and mercenary until finally seizing the throne of a kingdom. Arnold Swartzeneger starred as the muscle-bound fighting machine in the original film and it's sequel.

Pirates of the Caribbean 4 Coming!

Lets all feign shock that after three great money making movies, that a 4th is in the pipes. According to Doug at TheMovieBlog who strives to be one day as handsome as I am it will be a comedic buddy flick.

“toss the Elizabeth and Will characters over the side in favor of doing a bawdy buddy picture which would star Jack Sparrow and Barbossa. Where both captains of the Black Pearl would initially be competing for the exact same prize.”

“Eventually, all the double crossing would have to stop as these two rivals were then forced to join forces in order to defeat some supernatural terror.”

The first two movies were pure genius. The third one was alot of fun but overall really didnt do much for me. A new 4th movie that focuses squarely on Captain Jack?

Ellen Page Starring in Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell

Sam Raimi wrote the script for Drag Me to Hell with his brother Ivan quite a while ago under the title The Curse, and it was finished after they made Army of Darkness back in 1992. He's been sitting on this script that probably has immense inspiration from Evil Dead and Army of Darkness, since he wrote it while making those movies, and is just now starting to film it. While no budget has been explicitly specified, it is being referred to as low-budget, meaning I'm sure it'll be very much in the same vein as Evil Dead and Army of Darkness.

As for the plot, not much has been revealed. The most that anyone has said is that it is a "morality tale about the unwitting recipient of a supernatural curse", and I'm guessing that recipient is now Ellen Page. Ghost House co-founder Rob Tapert also says that "Sam calls it a 'spook-a-blast,' a wild ride with all the chills and spills that 'Evil Dead' delivered, without relying on the excessive violence of that film." I don't mind that much that it doesn't have the same "excessive violence" as Evil Dead as long as Raimi creates a movie that is reminiscent of his classic horror trio.

Fox Suing Warner Brothers Over Watchmen Movie

What the heck is it with lawsuits this week? First it's the Tolkien estate attacking New Line, now it's Fox attacking Warner Brothers. If you know me well enough, you probably know exactly what I'm going to say about this before we even begin. Fox filed suit on Friday against Warner Brothers, claiming they have the rights to develop, produce, and distribute a film based on Watchmen. Interesting thing to note: DC Comics, who published (and therefore owns the real rights to) Watchmen, is a subsidiary of Warner Brothers Entertainment and has been since 1969. Oh Fox, let's just admit you've already lost this case.

Fox's lawsuit seeks to "restrain (Warner Bros. Pictures) from taking actions that violate Fox's copyrights and which stand to forever impair Fox's rights to control the distribution and development of this unique work." In essence, this would shut down production on the film. They claim that between 1986 and 1990, they acquired all movie rights to the 12-issue DC Comics series and screenplays by Charles McKeown and Sam Hamm. That's not it though, things aren't that streak-free here.

In 1991, Fox sold some rights to Largo International with the understanding that the studio still held exclusive rights to distribute the first movie based on the graphic novel. Largo shut down sometime around 1994 and the rights were thus transfered to big-name producer Lawrence Gordon. Fox claims that under a separate agreement between Fox and Gordon, he would pay a "buy-out price" to Fox if he was contracted by another studio to develop Watchmen. Fox also claims that they have now not been paid the buy-out amount by either Gordon or Warner Brothers and have not been otherwise involved in the development of the movie, even though they think they should be.

Transformers 2 Update: Michael Bay Writing the Script?!

Of all things to report on today, the best news just happens to be about Transformers 2 and everyone's favorite action movie director, Michael Bay. The annual Visual Effects Society awards took place last Monday night and just about everyone from Transformers was there, including Megan Fox, Michael Bay and the entire ILM visual effects team. Multiple sources have quotes straight from Bay's mouth on the project, including that Bay has been writing the script himself! If you're a hardcore Transformers fan or if you loved the Transformers movie last summer, then you need to read on. Bay and company spill so many juicy details that it would make any Transformers fan foam at the mouth.

Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse, they just did. I'm not as big of a Michael Bay hater as some people, but that doesn't mean he knows how to write a good script. Rotten Tomatoes asked Bay about the status of Transformers 2 and he told them some very interesting news.

"I've been writing Transformers 2," said Bay. "We've got our characters all designed. I always write all my scripts, my movies anyway so at least I've got something to give the writers. It's like a template. We have a really good outline so I worked on that."

The date Paramount set of June 26th, 2009

Worthington to Star in Terminator

Sam Worthington will star in Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, reports Variety.

The fact the Australian actor just played the lead in the James Cameron-directed Avatar is no coincidence, added the trade. Cameron recommended Worthington to "Terminator Salvation" director McG, indicating that the director of the first two "Terminator" installments might be warming to the new pic.

Worthington will play the role of Marcus, a central figure in a three-picture arc that begins after Skynet has destroyed much of humanity in a nuclear holocaust. A group of survivors led by John Connor (Christian Bale) struggles to keep the machines from finishing the job.

Variety says McG spoke on the phone recently with Cameron, who is in New Zealand working on Avatar. It was during that chat that he recommended Worthington, who in Avatar plays a paraplegic war veteran from Earth who's brought to another planet inhabited by a race of humanoids at odds with Earth's inhabitants.

"Terminator Salvation" is targeting a summer 2009 release.

First Look: Gavin Hood's X-Men Origins: Wolverine

First things first, we all know what Hugh Jackman looks like as Wolverine - we've seen him in three X-Men movies - so this isn't about a first look at Wolverine, but rather a first look at the new movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and some interesting quotes from USA Today. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a spin-off prequel that focuses on the character of Logan, aka Wolverine. USA Today caught up recently with Hugh Jackman, who is currently filming Wolverine down in Australia, and got some worthwhile quotes out of him on top of a brand new photo.

Let's just get right down to it, I know you all want to see the photo, so without further ado here it is.

The new film will focus on Wolverine's past as he "discovers the world of mutants and, ultimately, the ominous Weapon X program, which turns people into living weapons." It's been mention many times previously that both William Stryker, who was portrayed by Brian Cox in the X-Men films, and Wolvie's arch-nemesis Sabretooth will have a role in the story. Jackman promises that Sabretooth "is going to play a big part in it." But that's not all, he also says that we will see "a good bit of cameos" of new and familiar mutants and that "you can't give too much away, because fans are pretty hard-core. Their expectations go up a level every time you come out with a new film." That's certainly true!

I wish we had more from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but unfortunately we've got to wait more than year for the movie, due out in theaters on May 1st, 2009.

Star Trek Pushed Back to May 2009!

The end of the writers strike is bringing about quite a few changes in Hollywood, and the first major announcement to hit surrounds J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek. The movie was originally supposed to open on December 25th this year, but Paramount has now moved it to May 8th, 2009. Variety claims that the move was made because Star Trek has "the potential to gross more in May than in December." While I completely agree with that statement, there have been some internal rumblings from the set regarding Abrams' desire to film more than what was in the script.

Λο, Ντεπ, Φάρελ παίρνουν τη θέση του Χιθ Λέτζερ στην τελευταία του ταινία The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Roland Emmerich Pushing 2012 : The end of the world As His Next Movie

Filmmaker Roland Emmerich (pictured right) is known for his epic summer blockbusters, having brought us the likes of Independence Day, Godzilla, The Patriot and The Day After Tomorrow. In just a few weeks his next movie, 10,000 B.C., will arrive in theaters and deliver yet another stunningly epic portrayal of a time past. But what comes after that? Back in August there were rumblings that Emmerich would be remaking the 1966 sci-fi classic Fantastic Voyage, but a report from Variety today tells us that he's shopping around a script for another epic film titled 2012 instead. He's even trying to sell it with a summer 2009 release date set and has everything on the production side ready to go, including budgets and marketing.

Emmerich has been shopping around a spec script for 2012, which means it's more of an idea, an elevator pitch per se (although a bit longer), rather than a completed script. Details are sketchy on what the film exactly entails, but it's said to involve wreaking havoc on the planet in some sort of "apocalyptic" way, which ties in with the belief that 2012 will be the end of the earth. Sources have said that this "project has more going for it than the big idea that studios love" and thus has started a bidding war. Now that the writers strike is over, studios are looking for big summer blockbusters to fill up the summer 2009 season, and 2012 seems to have a unique touch to it that all of the big wigs are going crazy over.

Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow were previously sold in similar ways, where Emmerich and his team pitched the spec script together with a pre-arranged release date and complete production budget. Fox bought both of those previously and they turned into huge hits for that studio. It's very interesting to see a filmmaker sell the film with a release date and marketing plan entirely in place before they even get their hands on it. But with Emmerich, he's proven he can put out hugely successful movies, so that idea could certainly work.

The year 2012 is believed by some to be the apocalyptic end of the earth because December 21st that year marks the end of thirteenth B'ak'tun cycle in the Long Count of the Mayan calendar. Although that doesn't mean much to you or me, many different sources have interpreted this to mean that there will be a major change in world order. You can read more on this over at Wikipedia. We aren't exactly sure what kind of situation Emmerich will present in his film, but we certainly hope it's not another snow storm!

We finally have official confirmation today that says there will not only be a new adaptation, but that it is being split into two movies!

Warner Brothers has re-acquired the rights and is putting the first film into production right away, aiming to release the first movie by the summer of 2009.

However, the film is primarily going to be adapted from anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo's graphic novel more than the original 1988 anime movie.
