First Look: Samuel L. Jackson as The Octopus in The Spirit

Η εργασιομανία του Στίβεν Σπίλμπεργκ τον τελευταίο καιρό έχει φτάσει σε Γούντι Άλεν όρια. Με δύο πρότζεκτ στο στάδιο του pre-production («Chicago 7», «Τεν-Τεν»), άλλο ένα να έχει ανακοινωθεί («Interstellar») και εν μέσω της «Ιντιάνα Τζόουνς» marketing επίθεσης, ο 61χρονος σκηνοθέτης ανακοίνωσε στο γερμανικό FOCUS, τις λεπτομέρειες για την επική ταινία που ετοιμάζει με θέμα τον Αβραάμ Λίνκολν.

Ο Σπίλμπεργκ αφού πρώτα θα βγάλει τα παιδικά του Τεν-Τεν απωθημένα, στη συνέχεια θα τα βάλει με την πρώιμη αμερικάνικη ιστορία και τον Εμφύλιο Πόλεμο.

Τα χρονικά περιθώρια για τα ανοιχτά πρότζεκτ του Στίβεν είναι αρκετά περιορισμένα, για πολλούς λόγους.

Καταρχήν, οι ηθοποιοί σκέφτονται να ερμηνεύσουν ομαδικά το ρόλο του Τσε στις αρχές του επόμενου χρόνου και να κλείσουν το Χόλιγουντ μαγαζί, ακολουθώντας το παράδειγμα των συντρόφων σεναριογράφων.

Το συλλογικό όργανο των αμερικάνων ηθοποιών που φέρει το όνομα SAG έχει ήδη ετοιμάσει τις πικέτες του και ο Σπίλμπεργκ προσπαθεί να προλάβει τα χειρότερα. Επίσης, το 2009 συμπληρώνονται τα 200 χρόνια από τη γέννηση του Προέδρου Αβραάμ με το καλλίγραμμο μούσι και η DreamWorks θέλει να προλάβει να σβήσει τα κεράκια στις κινηματογραφικές αίθουσες, για ευνόητους λόγους.

Ο Στίβεν, λοιπόν, ενώ ακόμα κουβαλά στις αποσκευές του το καπέλο εκστρατείας του Ιντιάνα, ανακοίνωσε ότι ο Τεν-Τεν θα αρχίσει να «κινείται» στα στούντιο από τις πρώτες μέρες του Φθινοπώρου, ενώ τα γυρίσματα για τον «Λίνκολν» θα ξεκινήσουν με τις πρώτες μέρες της καινούργιας χρονιάς.

Το σενάριο της ιστορικής ταινίας είναι ήδη έτοιμο και έχει βασιστεί στο βιβλίο της βραβευμένης με Πούλιτζερ συγγραφέως, Ντόρις Κερνς Γκούντγουιν, «The Uniter: The Genius of Abraham Lincoln».

Τη μεταφορά έχει επιμεληθεί ο Τόνι Κούσνερ, που έχει γράψει εκτός από το «Μόναχο» και τη καταπληκτική glam σειρά «Angels In America» που κέρδισε 5 Χρυσές Σφαίρες και έφερε μαζί στη μικρή οθόνη τον Αλ Πατσίνο, τον Πάτρικ Γουίλσον, την Έμα Τόμσον και την Μέριλ Στριπ.

Ο Λάιαμ Νίσον αφού έγραψε τη Σίντλερ λίστα του το 1993 υπό τις σκηνοθετικές οδηγίες του Στίβεν Σπίλμπεργκ, φέρεται να ψάχνει ήδη για μαύρο γιλέκο και στιλάτο φουλάρι, ενδυματολογικό σήμα κατατεθέν του Αβραάμ Λίνκολν.

Guy Ritchie Finally Helming a Sgt. Rock Movie?

DC Comics' Sgt. Rock has been a contender for a feature film adaptation for years, and now we finally have an update. Producer Joel Silver recently spoke with Moriarty at AICN and told him that he is (finally) going to get the Sgt. Rock movie made - with Snatch's Guy Ritchie helming.

An adaptation of the comic has been in the works for a while, with a script written by John Cox years ago. For those unfamiliar, Sgt. Rock is your regular infantry officer and comic book character first published by DC Comics in 1959. The comics are actually set in WWII, and a previous report confirms that Cox kept the film set during that time, keeping the nostalgic nature of the character. With Guy Ritchie nearly on board, this sounds like it will finally come together all right before G.I. Joe hits.

While it's not official by any means, Silver's response to the mention of Sgt. Rock was: "I'm going to make that. I'm going to make that very soon. With Guy Ritchie, I think." Silver and Ritchie have already been working together on Ritchie's latest British gangster film, RocknRolla.

Silver had also mentioned that he was a fan of Ritchie's earlier films and that RocknRolla "is raw, it is funny, it is dark, it is great." But did he really impress him enough to convince him that he was the right guy to finally bring Sgt. Rock to the big screen? Apparently so.

Jan de Bont Directing Point Break Sequel

Jan de Bont (Twister, Speed) is set to direct Point Break: Indo, says The Hollywood Reporter.

RGM Entertainment and Essential Entertainment will executive produce this Asia-based follow-up to director Kathryn Bigelow's 1991 original, which starred de Bont's Speed lead Keanu Reeves as an FBI agent casing a gang of surfer bank robbers. The new film will take place 20 years after the disappearance of one of the criminal surfers (Patrick Swayze).

Both the original and sequel are written by W. Peter Iliff. The trade says plot details and possible character reprises have not been disclosed, but the film will shoot in Singapore and Southeast Asia.

Taylor Morgan Pictures' Chris Taylor and John Morgan will produce. RGM's Devesh Chetty, Essential's Jere Hausfater and Neil Kaplan, and de Bont will executive produce.

Transformers 2 Coming in 3-D?

The "2008 ShoWest Edition" of the Dolby newsletter (in PDF format) has a list of upcoming 3-D releases and includes Transformers 2 (as well as Steven Spielberg's Tintin).

We're hearing that, although it's on the list, the sequel is not a lock yet for a 3-D release. A final decision will be made based on the availability of Digital 3-D and IMAX 3-D screens.

The big problem facing the Transformers sequel is that Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs comes out just five days later and would rule out a majority of the Digital 3-D screens.

In related news, director Michael Bay has confirmed on his message board that he has cast Aussie actress Isabel Lucas for the role of "Alice" in the sequel.

Paul Thomas Anderson Directing Metal Gear Solid Movie?!

A feature film adaptation of Konami's Metal Gear Solid has "been in the works" for a while. We first mentioned it back in February of 2007 when Sony announced that they would be producing it, and we mentioned it again in March of this year when producer Michael De Luca confirmed that they're trying to get it back on track with a script written by Equilibrium's Kurt Wimmer. Now Kotaku reports that Konami's Aki Saito said that Paul Thomas Anderson, of There Will Be Blood and Magnolia, is one of the potential directors. He didn't name anyone else either, just PTA, and SlashFilm confirmed separately that he didn't mistake him for Paul W.S. Anderson. This is real folks!

Kotaku spoke with Saito at a press conference for Metal Gear Solid 4, due out this summer, and received an update on the production. Saito is the guy who is handling the film negotiations for Konami, which would make him the right guy to know exactly what's going on. Apparently Saito actually fully said "Paul Thomas Anderson" and not just "Paul Anderson," which is enough confirmation for us to believe that PTA is legitimately being pursued as the director of the film. Saito also spoke briefly about the current state of the project and their concern for preventing this from becoming another video game flop.

"Hollywood has great respect for Mr. Kojima. They want to meet with him. Kojima will be acting as a producer, but we don't know how involved he'll be as a producer. Often Hollywood adaptations have the original game creator involved at the beginning, but somewhere along the line they fall out of view. This is why it's very important for us to carefully pick the studio for this project."

It appears that Hideo Kojima, the game's original creator and designer, won't be directing but instead will be producing. Everyone knows that Kojima's involvement is integral with this adaptation and it sounds like Konami actually understands the film's potential. They're really turning this into a truly high profile project, and now with the mention of Paul Thomas Anderson, they've solidified my speculation that it is definitely going to be something extraordinary. While nothing is confirmed, and Sony especially isn't talking, it sounds realistically like PTA is actually one of the directors they're pursuing.

Αυτές είναι οι πρώτες φωτογραφίες με τη Φοξ (στο "σώμα της Jennifer") να γυρίζει και να κάνει ό,τι της λέει η πιο εναλλακτική σεναριαγράφος του Χόλιγουντ, Ντιάμπλο Κόντι (βλέπε "Juno").

Το "Jennifer's Body" δεν είναι, όμως, indie κωμωδία με πρωταγωνίστρια κάποια νεαρή κοπέλα με φουσκωμένη κοιλιά, αλλά πρόκειται για ένα θρίλερ με πρωταγωνίστρια μια cheerleader που μεταμορφώνεται σε δολοφόνο των συμμαθητών της. Προσοχή όμως! Τα θύματα της είναι μόνο γένους αρσενικού...

Dawn of the Dead going 3-D !!!

Producer Richard Rubinstein (Dawn of the Dead remake) told Fangoria they will be putting out a 3-D version of Romero's masterpiece Dawn of the Dead! Furthermore, they wouldn't be butchering it as In-Three would be doing it and they've been praised by the likes of George Lucas, James Cameron, etc..

Time period is set at about a year but there's really no details right now.

Richard also dropped that he will be directing a sequel of the original Dawn so let's hope it doesn't suck like the Dawn remake.

James Cameron's Plans After Avatar !

"After 'Avatar,' I want to do something a lot smaller," James Cameron told The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday.

A possible next project is The Dive, a true story about the romance between controversial Cuban free diver Francisco "Pipin" Ferreras and Frenchwoman Audrey Mestre. Under his guidance, Mestre became a free diver who broke several world records but died in 2002 while competing.

"It's a drama, a love story," Cameron said. "This will require underwater photography, which will look gorgeous in 3-D."

Clooney kills Goats

George Clooney has a certain dreamy appeal, but can he slay animals just by looking at them?

We'll find out in THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS, based on Jon Ronson's book about the US military's purported flirtation with the supernatural.

The story focuses on the secret First Earth Battalion, tasked with the purpose of creating "Warrior Monks," soldiers capable of walking through walls, becoming invisible, reading minds and even killing a goat telepathically. Unrealistic as it sounds, this is presented as a true story, although I'd believe pretty much anything after the past eight years.

GOATS will be directed by Clooney's producing partner Grant Heslov, who most of you will probably remember as the jittery tech guy from TRUE LIES. Clooney (who directed CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND, another questionable yet not unbelievable "true" story of secret government programs) is supposedly stung from the non-success of LEATHERHEADS, but this doesn't exactly sound like a return to the safety of the mainstream. Unless OCEAN'S FOURTEEN is announced next...

Chosen (2009)

The guys who made the gritty looking sci-fi horror The Dark Lurking are now in pre-production on a new movie called Chosen.

It's a sci-fi fantasy flick with an ancient evil and a prophecy.

SYNOPSIS

"Anterion was a land bathed in beauty, and of heartache. Over 100,000 years ago there was an evil so devastating that time itself could not consume it. Its name was Kaylen. For the eternity that Kaylen wreaked havoc on Anterion, his obsession turned out to be his undoing. The emotion that he felt for Natasha was so strong that when he became aware of her betrothal to another, he lost his mind. The ensuing devastation caused on Anterion prompted the Elders into unsurpassable action. To fashion 'Kylar'. A portal directly to hell.

During the creation of "Kylar" the power that was conjured, along with the unstable power that Kaylen possessed ruptured the very fabric of space and time, and the portal no longer hurtled towards hell, instead it landed here, on earth.

City of Ember (2008)

Μια υπόγεια πόλη με ημερομηνία λήξης τα 200 χρόνια ζωής. Το όνομα αυτής: "City of Ember" και η πηγή τη ενέργειας της είναι το φως. Τώρα όμως η άμμος στην κλεψύδρα έπεσε όλη προς τη μία πλευρα και προειδοποιεί το ... τέλος.

Τα φώτα τρεμοσβήνουν, το ρεύμα τελειώνει και το σκοτάδι έρχεται. Η μόνη σωτηρία των κατοίκων της είναι η απόδραση προς τα πάνω. Όμως, το μυστικό της εξόδου δεν το ξέρει κανείς και δύο 12χρονα παιδιά αναλαμβάνουν να το μάθουν όσο πιο γρήγορα μπορούν για ν' ανέβουν στον πάνω κόσμο.

Το trailer μόλις βγήκε από τα έγκατα και είναι φανταστικό! (δειτε το στο threads με τα νεα tailers).

Παρ' όλο που πρόκειται για παιδική ταινία, μπορεί κάλλιστα να έχει στην αίθουσα πολλούς ενήλικους για θεατές.

Την ιστορία, την οποία αρχικά έχει γράψει η Ζαν Ντου Προ στη σειρά των βιβλίων της "The City of Ember" και η σεναριογράφος του "Χριστουγεννιάτικου Εφιάλτη", Κάρολάιν Τόμσον, την πείραξε για να τη μεταφέρει στο σινεμα και μάλιστα έχει φανατικούς υποστηρικτές την αγωνία και το ενδιαφέρον.

Ο Μπίλ Μάρει είναι ο αυτοκράτορας της υπόγειας πόλης, ο οποίος κάνει ένα καταστροφικό λάθος. Η Σαοίρς Ρόναν -εκείνο το κοριτσάκι από την "Εξιλέωση" που σ' έκανε να θέλεις να σπάσεις την οθόνη- με το φίλο της, προσπαθούν να βρουν τα χαμένα κομμάτια από τα στοιχεία που θα τους οδηγήσουν στην πολυπόθητη έξοδο, με τον μυστήριο εφευρέτη Τιμ Ρόμπινς να τους παρακολουθεί.

Gyllenhaal and Arterton Cast in Prince of Persia

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Jake Gyllenhaal (who was first rumored by Latino Review) and Gemma Arterton (upcoming Quantum of Solace) will star in Prince of Persa: The Sands of Time, Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films' adaptation of Ubisoft's popular video game. Mike Newell is directing.

In the fantasy adventure, Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a young prince in sixth century Persia who must join forces with Tamina (Arterton), a feisty and exotic princess, to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

Doug Miro & Carlo Bernard, Jordan Mechner and Boaz Yakin wrote the script, which is based on the many games created by Jordan Mechner.

Bruckheimer is producing, while Mike Stenson, Chad Oman and Patrick McCormick are exec producing.

Production is set to start in July.

James Cameron Talks Avatar

Titanic director James Cameron talked today at Microsoft Advance '08 about his highly-anticipated Avatar, which 20th Century Fox will release in theaters on December 18, 2009. Search Engine Watch has a great rundown of what Cameron talked about and here are just a few clips:

"'Avatar' will make people truly experience something," said Cameron. "One more layer of the suspension of disbelief will be removed. All the syn-thespians are photo-realistic. Now that we've achieved it, we discovered CG characters in 3D look more real than in 2D. Your brain is cued it's a real thing not a picture and discounting part of [the] image that makes it look fake."

"'Avatar' is the single most complex piece of filmmaking ever made," said Cameron. "We have 1,600 shots for a 2.5 hour movie. It's not with a single CGI character, like King Kong or Gollum. We have hundreds of photo-realistic CG characters. We were Microsoft's sandbox for filmmaking beyond the cutting edge."

Christian Bale Officially Signed On for Three Terminator Films

Despite the questionable PG-13 rating, Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins (aka Terminator 4) gets a nice little boost of positive news today. Derek Anderson of the film's production company, Halcyon, spoke to the BBC at Cannes and said in glorious black-and-white grandeur, "[Christian Bale] read the script and he loved it, so he's signed on for all three." We've known for some time that the next Terminator installment would set up a new trilogy for the franchise, and that Bale is to assume the role of rebel leader John Connor in the 2009 film; but it's certainly news that Bale will provide such a great degree of consistency and completeness in this sci-fi classic's reboot. So will Bale become the new face of the Terminator franchise, replacing Arnold's ever-present mug?

Breck Eisner Bringing Flash Gordon Back!

News comes today that Eisner has been attached to also directed the revival of Flash Gordon.

Sony just won the recent bidding war over the rights, which took place because "studios are showing a heightened appetite for branded fare that could be made into a franchise."

Only Eisner and producer Neal Moritz are officially attached so far, as a writer for the project hasn't been found yet. The last time we saw Flash Gordon on the big screen was in 1980, with Sam J. Jones as Flash, and now he's returning alongside of countless other 80's revivals, including even Buck Rogers.

Flash Gordon originally was a science fiction newspaper comic strip drawn by Alex Raymond in the 1930s and was created to compete with another sci-fi strip, Buck Rogers.

Flash was first adapted to the screen via Buster Crabbe serials and was made into a lavish 1980 film. In the film, Flash was an athlete who travels to the planet Mongo with his lady love, Dale Arden, and the mad scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov.

There, they discover a world ruled by Ming the Merciless and meet such strange inhabitants as the Hawkmen and the Sharkmen. Need we point you in the direction of this Queen song as a reminder of Flash Gordon?

Aliens & insects to destroy Europe in upcoming Spanish film El Eternauta

Take the guns away from Johnny Rico and the gang in Starship Troopers and ship them off to Europe and you've got yourself El Eternauta, a very awesome sounding post-apocalyptic film that "will follow a group of survivors who, after living through a deadly snow that overtakes Europe, are forced to battle invading aliens and their army of giant insects.

The film, which is being produced by Argentina’s K&S Films, is said to be an extensive production that will feature massive set pieces and tons of SFX.

Mathieu Kassovitz flick called MNP for 2012 " end of the world "

As we all know, 2012 is doomsday according to Mayan's prophesy, so it follows that we should expect a certain amount of interest in post-apocalyptic properties from both studios and creative types as we approach our very demise.

We saw the same kind of thing right before the turn of the millennium when everyone predicted that the dreaded Y2K would upturn society by sending us back to the computing stone age and we're going to see it now. Well, it seems that Babylon A.D. director Mathieu Kassovitz has set his sights on an ambitious "end of the world" space project, called "MNP," that will start to shoot in 2011 so that it can presumably drop in 2012.

Said Kassovitz about the technologically heavy project that will utilize special planes that are able to simulate a zero gravity environment ; "This is my ultimate movie. Everything we've done until now has been preparing us to be able make this movie."

Marvel Studios to Adapt Runaways


Marvel Studios will bring "Runaways" to the big screen.

Brian K. Vaughan, who co-created the series with artist Adrian Alphona, is writing the adaptation, for which Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will act as producer.

"Runaways" follows a group of teenagers who find that some family secrets are bigger than others when they discover their parents are actually super-villains.

Running away from their homes, the teens band together and begin a journey of discovery, both of their parents' origins and of their own inherited powers, while trying to make up for the evil done by their folks.
