J.J. Abrams, Simon Pegg and Simon Kinberg talk Star Wars movies

First up, "Episode VII" director J.J. Abrams spoke with his Star Trek Into Darkness star Simon Pegg about the filmmaker taking on the "Star Wars" franchise. You can watch the video below!

In a separate interview, the Los Angeles Times spoke to writer Simon Kinberg about the stand-alone films. In April, Walt Disney Pictures confirmed that Star Wars: Episode VII will hit theaters in the summer of 2015 and that every summer after that will offer a "Star Wars" film, alternating with one of the stand-alone films. Those stand-alone films are being worked on by Kinberg and "The Empire Strikes Back" writer Lawrence Kasdan.

"We're really at the early phases of figuring out the details, but the spirit of the original movie is the thing I fell in love with, so it's the spirit of that that I think will guide us," Kinberg said.

He added that what "worked so well in all of the 'Star Wars' movies is the characters. I think the reason that they’re different than other science fiction or other genre movies is because George [Lucas] created a universe of people that you wanted to go back and see over and over again, and that’s why it’s spanned and spawned so many different mediums, so many different generations, every different language. You want to go back and see those characters, like I did when I was a kid. 'Empire Strikes Back' was the first movie I saw in a movie theater more than once. And I went back 10, 15 times in the theater, and I've seen it probably over a 100 times since. But I saw it that many times in the theater because I loved those characters. I loved Han, I loved Leia, I loved Luke, I was right at the age when I was old enough to start to understand the nuance of that movie. I think I was too young for 'New Hope' when it came out in the theater, although I loved it and it was my favorite film until 'Empire.' And then really, that changed my life, that movie."

Kinberg was also asked which character is his favorite. "There's so many that I love and for different reasons. I really love Han Solo. He does that thing that Larry does so well. He's really human and real, but also really fun and banter-y and larger than life. And when I was a kid, I wanted to be Han Solo."

Star Wars: Episode VII plans UK production

Lucasfilm announced today that production of Star Wars: Episode VII will take place in the United Kingdom. All of the six previous live-action Star Wars movies have included UK production in such famed studios as Elstree, Shepperton, Leavesden, Ealing and Pinewood Studios.

"We've devoted serious time and attention to revisiting the origins of 'Star Wars' as inspiration for our process on the new movie, and I'm thrilled that returning to the UK for production and utilizing the incredible talent there can be a part of that," said Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm. "Speaking from my own longstanding connection to the UK with films like 'Raiders of the Lost Ark', 'Empire of the Sun' and recently 'War Horse', it's very exciting to be heading back."

Earlier this year, representatives from Lucasfilm met with the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, in London to establish an agreement to produce Star Wars in the U.K.

"I am delighted that Star Wars is coming back to Britain. Today's announcement that the next Star Wars film will be shot and produced in the UK is great news for fans and our creative industries," Osborne said today.

John Williams confirmed for Star Wars: Episode VII

John Williams, the legendary composer who crafted the iconic, sweeping music of all six films in the "Star Wars" saga, is returning to score Star Wars: Episode VII, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced today at Star Wars Celebration Europe. Williams' grand orchestral compositions for "Star Wars" are among the most beloved and recognizable in movie history, from the classic "Main Title" theme introduced in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope to the ominous "Imperial March" from Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back to the stirring "Duel of the Fates" from the prequel trilogy.

Williams, whose career spans over six decades, has won five Academy Awards and has scored some of the most popular and critically-acclaimed films of all time, including Jaws, the "Indiana Jones" series, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, Lincoln, and countless others.

The composer joins a growing list of all-star creators including director J.J. Abrams, screenwriter Michael Arndt, and consultants Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg, who are shaping Star Wars: Episode VII, currently set for a 2015 release.

Watch StarWars.com's new interview with Williams below, in which he discusses composing the music for Star Wars: Episode VII, working with Kathleen Kennedy and J.J. Abrams, and why he's excited about returning to a galaxy far, far away.

Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy talks Star Wars: Episode VII

In addition to the announcement that John Williams is returning to score Star Wars: Episode VII, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy talked more about the anticipated film at Star Wars Celebration Europe. In a panel hosted by Warwick Davis, Kennedy said (via IGN) that she is currently dividing her time between Lucasfilm and Bad Robot, where she's having story meetings with J.J. Abrams and the writing team.

"The story and characters are all we're talking about right now," said Kennedy. "We have an amazing team at ILM, who can create fantastic effects, but if we don't have a great story and characters, the effects mean nothing. I do think making huge popular culture – and I've had the good fortune to be a part of a lot it – is really hard to do and get right. And if you don't spend the time you need on developing characters, and finding stories, complicated stories, the audience gets tired because they think they're seeing the same thing again and again."

She added that "Episode VII" will combine real locations and special effects. "It's a conversation we're having all the time in the development of 'Episode VII.' Looking at all the Star Wars movies and getting a feel for what even some of the early films did, combining real locations and special effects – that's something we're looking very seriously at. So we're going to find some very cool locations that we're going to use in support of 'Episode VII.' And I think we're probably going to end up using every single tool in the toolbox to create the look of these movies."

Davis asked Kennedy what was in that toolbox, to which she responded: "It's using model makers; it's using real droids; it's taking advantage of artwork that you actually can touch and feel. And we want to do that in combination with CG effects. We figure that's what will make it real."

Here is also her discussion backstage with Warwick Davis:

Star Wars celebration VII to be held in Anaheim, CA in 2015

At the closing ceremonies of Star Wars Celebration Europe on Sunday, Lucasfilm announced that its next fan fest – Star Wars Celebration VII – will be timed to the theatrical release of Star Wars: Episode VII, and will be held in Anaheim, California from April 16-18, 2015. Does this mean we should expect a May, 2015 release for "Episode VII"? Hopefully we'll find out soon.

Star Wars Celebration Europe was attended by more than 20,000 fans from 40 different countries. In a Main Stage event hosted by Warwick Davis, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced that legendary composer John Williams will return to score the highly-anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII, to be directed by J.J. Abrams. And one of the Executive Producers from "Star Wars Rebels," Dave Filoni, was on hand to guide fans through the genesis of the upcoming animated series, revealing designs heavily influenced by original "Star Wars" concept artist Ralph McQuarrie. While unable to attend in person, Executive Producers Simon Kinberg and Greg Weisman shared their excitement for the series in a video message recorded exclusively for Celebration attendees. "Star Wars Rebels" will begin airing on Disney XD starting in fall of 2014.

"Star Wars: The Clone Wars" was also featured at the event, spotlighting a first look at The Complete Season Five Blu-ray and DVD boxed sets, and the massive Seasons 1-5 Collector's Edition, both scheduled for an October 15 release.

Lucasfilm also released two more backstage videos, the first of which is Warwick Davis talking to concept artists Doug Chiang and Iain McCaig and the second features Davis interviewing "Star Wars Rebels" executive producer Dave Filoni.

Dan Mindel to lens Star Wars: Episode VII, will shoot on 35mm

It appears that Star Wars: Episode VII has found its cinematographer and it's one that should come as no surprise to fans of director J.J. Abrams. The Boba Fett Fan Club (via TheForce.net) reports that Dan Mindel, who previously worked with Abrams on Mission: Impossible III and both Star Trek films, will lens the highly-anticipated big screen sequel. What's more, they're confirming that the film will be shot on celluloid (specifically Kodak 35mm stock 5219).

Mindel's work next hits the big screen with the May 2, 2014 release of Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Star Wars stand-alone movies will be origin stories

We know that Disney plans on releasing Star Wars: Episode VII in 2015, Star Wars: Episode VIII in 2017 and Star Wars: Episode IX in 2019, with two spin-off movies arriving in 2016 and 2018. Disney CFO Jay Rasulo spoke at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference in Beverly Hills earlier today, where he revealed that the spin-offs will be "origin movies."

We first reported on the spin-offs in February, when Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are writing the movies. The next day, we confirmed that the movies will focus on Han Solo and Boba Fett.

The Han Solo movie will take place between Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, with Boba Fett's movie occurring between Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope and Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back, following the bounty hunter on one of his most dangerous missions along with numerous sidekicks.

Jay Rasulo also spoke about broadening LucasFilm's merchandising base into international markets, since the company previously only focused on U.S. licensing programs. Disney's in-house licensing and consumer products teams will spend the next year making deals around the world to broaden the reach of this brand.

"We will lay the groundwork for that ... and when the film comes out in 2015, we'll be ready to blow it out."

When asked if he was worried that today's children aren't aware of the Star Wars brand, the executive had this to say.

"This is not a new franchise for kids. The sky's the limit. There's incredible flexibility. It's an unbelievable palette to create from."

The executive also noted that the studio plans on implementing a cap on film budgets, in the wake of Disney's box office bomb The Lone Ranger.

"There needs to be a cap on (budgets of) tentpole franchise movies. Going forward, we will see a cap on spending on those movies."

Does this mean the new Star Wars films will be low budget affairs? Look for unknowns to take the leads, which will ensure a cutting of costs as Disney plans at least five back-to-back movies over the course of the next six and a half years.

Star Wars: Episode VII comes to theaters in 2015 and stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams.

Untitled Star Wars Han Solo Spin-Off comes to theaters in 2016 and stars Harrison Ford.

Untitled Star Wars Boba Fett Spin-Off comes to theaters in 2018.

J.J. Abrams says he's targeting an 'emotional and authentic' Star Wars: Episode VII

Promoting the upcoming Bad Robot series "Almost Human," J.J. Abrams spoke today with EW about his much anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII, which is currently on track for an unspecified 2015 release.

“It’s been nice seeing how important ['Star Wars'] is and to be reminded how important it is to so many people," says Abrams. "We all know that [George Lucas'] dream has become almost a religion to some people. I remember reading a thing somewhere, someone wrote about just wanting [the new film] to feel real; to feel authentic. I remember I felt that way when I was 11 years old when I saw the first one. As much of a fairy tale as it was, it felt real. And to me, that is exactly right.”

Abrams also says that it's hard to name a specific tone for the new film because "it’s going to be an evolving thing."

"I would say we are working really hard to make a movie that feels as emotional and authentic and exciting as possible," he adds. "Whatever your favorite Star Wars movie is and how to compare it is really sort of subjective.”

New video from Star Wars 1313 teases the future of big screen VFX

Announced last summer, plans for Star Wars 1313, a state-of-the-art video game take on the Star Wars universe, are now on hold following the closing of LucasArts earlier this year. Today, however, The Inquirer managed to get a sneak peek at the work that went into the development of 1313 when Lucasfilm's chief technology strategy officer Kim Libreri spoke at a BAFTA event in London.

"Everyone has seen what we can do in movies," Libreri says of what modern video game technology could lead to. "...We think that computer graphics are going to be so realistic in real time computer graphics that, over the next decade, we'll start to be able to take the post out of post-production; where you'll leave a movie set and the shot is pretty much complete."

Libreri theorizes that the advancement of digital technology could lead to a point where big screen filmmaking could eschew post production, effectively providing directors with a finished VFX shot immediately after they shoot it.

"If you combine video games with film-making techniques, you can start to have these real deep, multi-user experiences," Libreri contines. "Being able to animate, edit and compose live is going to change the way we work and it's really going to bring back the creative experience in digital effects."

It remains to be seen precisely how new technology might affect J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII or any of the other live action films in the Lucasfilm pipeline but, as you can see from the video below, the video game landscape is expanding rapidly.

Are Harrison Ford and Benedict Cumberbatch just playing coy about being in Star Wars: Episode VII?

Harrison Ford and Benedict Cumberbatch, two of the rumored leads for J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII, appeared on the BBC's "The Graham Norton Show" and were both asked point-blank about their potential involvement with the much-anticipated 2015 release. Although neither of the pair confirms that they're joining the cast, the below video non-confirmation is interesting in and of itself. Check it out in the player below!

"It's safe to say you're in it, I think, yeah," Cumberbatch tells Ford at one point, who only responds with (potentially mock) confusion.

Star Wars: Episode VII script due in January, No story for Indiana Jones 5 yet

While speaking this morning at Variety's dealmaker breakfast, Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn revealed that, while work isn't yet complete on the script for the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII, the studio expects J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan to have it ready in January. A fifth Indiana Jones film, meanwhile, is a bit further off.

"We need a story," Horn said regarding the action adventure franchise, going on to speculate that a new film is at least two or three years away (per Variety writer Marc Graser's Twitter feed).

Horn also said that, while no budget has officially been decided on for Episode VII, it's likely in the ballpark of $200 million. He also reiterated that plans call for a new Star Wars film every year, alternating between "saga" chapters and single character spinoffs.

Kathleen Kennedy discusses plans for the Star Wars canon

With Lucasfilm's new "Sandcrawler" building having just opened in Singapore, The Straits Times (via /Film and ToysREvil) managed to catch up with President Kathleen Kennedy, who teased some details about plans for the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII and about the overall direction the franchise will be taking moving forward.

"There is no attempt being made to carry characters [from the standalone films] in and out of the saga episodes," she says. "Consequently, from the creative standpoint, it’s a roadmap that George made pretty clear... The canon that he created was the Star Wars saga. Right now, Episode Seven falls within that canon. The spinoff movies -- or we may come up with some other way to call those films -- they exist within that vast universe that he created."

It sounds like Kennedy is saying that, while the standalone films are set in the Star Wars universe, fans should expect the stories that they offer to go off in new directions and that ties between those films and future saga episodes are to be quite minimal.

J.J. Abrams says the script is set for Star Wars: Episode VII

The next chapter in the Star Wars saga is just about ready to shoot as director J.J. Abrams (also co-writing alongside Lawrence Kasdan) reveals that the screenplay for Star Wars: Episode VII is complete.

"We're working really hard and we've got our script and we're in deep prep," Abrams tells TheWrap. "Full steam ahead, y’know?"

Abrams also responded to a question about the recent rumor that "Breaking Bad" star Jesse Plemons has read for a role. Although Abrams confirms that Plemons has auditioned, he also cautions fans that a lot more is going on behind the scenes than makes it to the headlines, refusing to disclose whether or not Plemons is actually anywhere close to a role.
