Star Wars: Episode VII set 30 years after Return of the Jedi, Will feature heroic trio

Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm today revealed that, as has long been expected, their Star Wars: Episode VII will begin production at London's historic Pinewood Studios in May. What's more, they've confirmed that the action in the sequel will be set 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi and that the storyline follows "a trio of new young leads along with some very familiar faces."

The film's cast is expected to be announced shortly with "Girls" and Inside Llewyn Davis star Adam Driver heavily rumored to play the film's Darth Vader-like antagonist. Among the other actors rumored to be in contention are 12 Years a Slave's Lupita Nyong'o and quite a few young male stars.

Disney's Alan Horn says Star Wars: Episode VII is already shooting

The Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn was interviewed on April 2nd by The Hollywood Reporter's Stephen Galloway at Loyola Marymount University School of Film and Television in Los Angeles and was asked about the status of Star Wars: Episode VII.

As far as casting, Horn said "we have a lot of them, it's just not completely done yet." Of course, no one has officially been announced yet. He did add that casting has been the toughest part.

He was also asked about the rumor that filming starts in six weeks (on May 14th to be exact), but Horn revealed that they have already started. "Actually, we're shooting some of it now," he said.

He said getting the script right has been very important, considering the movie takes place after the events of "Return of the Jedi" and that was released over 30 years ago. "It's all about the screenplay. It has to be screenplay, screenplay, screenplay." He assured that the screenplay is now where it needs to be. The script was written by Lawrence Kasdan and J.J. Abrams, following an early draft by Michael Arndt.

Λούη, you're doing it wrong! :p:p

Star Wars: Episode VII sets Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca!

ComingSoon.net reported late last month that original Star Wars trilogy star Peter Mayhew was likely to reprise his role as Chewbacca in J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII. Today, The Hollywood Reporter brings confirmation, reporting that the 69-year-old actor will, indeed, play the famous Wookiee in the December 18, 2015 release.

Disney Chairman Alan Horn talks Star Wars

The Walt Disney Studios controls some of the most popular film franchises on the planet. From Star Wars: Episode VII to the entirety of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, many fan-favorite films are coming out of one place. Very few people there can actually speak about the progress on all these films, except one man, Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Horn was speaking at the Tribeca Film Festival today in New York (via Bloomberg) and had a lot to say about the juggernaut in the Disney stable.

Star Wars: Episode VII, which Horn says has nearly completed casting, but they're not ready to announce it just yet.

"We're not prepared to announce it yet but we will be very shortly announcing what we're doing....We did some second unit work in Abu Dhabi and other places, because we have all these locations we have to film and we have to give it that "Star Warsian," if I can use that as an adjective, look. So we needed to go to different places that give us the right look and feel and we did have second unit work shooting already but we haven't commenced the main part of principle photography yet."

Horn was also asked about the December release date for "Episode VII" and whether that will become their new target for future "Star Wars" films, saying:

"No, we're not sure yet, we may revert. The Star Wars dates have been May, and we may revert to that at some point, it depends on the readiness of the screenplays or where we are, but this first one will be December 18th of 2015, so we'll start with that and we'll see.

The budget for the upcoming "Star Wars" films was brought up, which Horn says will be quite pricey if you couldn't guess.

"We actually don't even have the completed budget yet. But it will be in that range. These large, tentpole kinds of movies, on the expensive side, are in the neighborhood of $175-200 million, that kind of a number -- some are more, some are less. We need to give the audience, essentially, a full meal in return for their affection and devotion and love for these properties."

Horn also confirmed that "Star Wars" creator George Lucas does have a bit of a hand in the film, as he will serve as a consultant on the production.

"George is a consultant. The understanding is when he sold the company -- and he did sell the company to the Walt Disney Company -- so he's very aware of that. So we now are the primary drivers behind this property. But he is a very valued person. He's the father of all this. Kathy interacts with him, back and forth I think."

Is this the working title for Star Wars: Episode VII?

It's never enough for us Star Wars fans! With the cast for Star Wars: Episode VII just announced last week, our attention now turns to other aspects of the film, such as "What's the story?" and "What's the title?" Well we may have an idea on that now as Ain't It Cool News brings word from a source that the working title for "Episode VII" is "The Ancient Fear," which they say refers to Max von Sydow's character who will serve as the villain of the film. This lacks confirmation from the studio, of course, and we likely won't hear anything official until San Diego Comic-Con.

'At least three' non-saga Star Wars films also in the work

Although it's certainly no surprise given the immense popularity of the franchise, The Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger confirmed today during a Q2 Fiscal 2014 Earnings Conference Call that "at least three" Star Wars films are in development beyond the new trilogy of "Saga" chapters. Up until now, only two of these standalone projects were confirmed.

Referred to in the past as "origin story film", these features are said to be targeting release dates that alternate with the Saga entries, suggesting that these three (presumably the first of many more) will arrive in 2016, 2018 and 2019. Although previous rumors have suggested that these adventures will follow Han Solo, Boba Fett and/or Yoda, nothing specific has as of yet been confirmed outside of Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg's involvement on the screenplay side.

Star Wars: Episode VII adds Lupita Nyong'o and Gwendoline Christie

Lupita Nyong'o joins the recently announced cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. This year, her breakthrough performance in 12 Years a Slave earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Gwendoline Christie, currently starring in the hit television series "Game of Thrones" as Brienne of Tarth, has also been cast in the production. She can next be seen in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2.

"I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of 'Episode VII,'" says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. "It's thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape."

Read J.J. Abrams' tongue-in-cheek response to leaked Star Wars set photos

This week photos from the set of Star Wars: Episode VII have made their way online, and this morning J.J. Abrams' production company Bad Robot posted their own image from the set featuring a note from the director with a rather cheeky response to the whole ordeal. Keen-eyed readers might also notice that J.J. Abrams' "denial" of the Millennium Falcon appearing in "Episode VII" is actually posted on the Holochess board from the famous ship, which Chewbacca and R2-D2 play against each other in the original Star Wars. Check out the director's note below.

Another Star Wars film confirmed for London production

Though it comes as no big surprise given that J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII is already in production there, Pinewood Studios is confirmed to be the home of at least one additional Star Wars film. George Osborne, England's Chancellor of the Exchequer & MP for Tatton, tweeted the following:

Shortly thereafter, he tweeted the below image of himself standing alongside Abrams, Kathleen Kennedy and a very familiar astromech droid in front what appears to be an in-construction Millennium Falcon set!

This specific project is likely to be the Gareth Edwards-Star Wars 2016 release, but it's also a safe bet that Star Wars has found a home at Pinewood for the forseeable future.
