Marc Webb calls The Amazing Spider-Man 2 'an aggressive step forward'

We're just six days away from The Amazing Spider-Man 2's new Super Bowl Spot and to further pump up the eager fans, director Marc Webb has some high praise for the upcoming sequel.

Speaking with Total Film, Webb spoke about the giant scale of the film saying, "It's huge. We're pushing the levels of effects, the level of action and the emotional capacity of this kid. It's an aggressive step forward....We throw around the term 'operatic' because of the spectacle and the theatre involved, which is pretty epic.There are enormous sets and great set-pieces. But really it's a very intimate song – this relationship between Peter and Gwen is very delicate and beautiful."

"Epic" is an appropriate term for the film, which will be the second in a planned four-film series that will further expand to include spin-offs for The Sinister Six and Venom in the coming years.

Marc Webb reveals B.J. Novak's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 character

The subject of much speculation from fans, and previously teased by the actor himself, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 director Marc Webb seemingly revealed on Twitter this afternoon that B.J. Novak is playing none other than Alistair Smythe in the upcoming sequel.

The son of the "Spider Slayer" creator Spencer Smythe, Alistair went on to be just as formidable a foe for the webhead as his father and has even been previously teased on the viral website for the upcoming movie. It remains to be seen what Smythe's involvement will be in the film's overall plot, but given Oscorp's relationship with the villains of the series, we're going to wager a guess that he might be working on something for them.

Marc Webb addresses The Amazing Spider-Man 2 villain overload concerns

It's pretty clear from the promotional material that has already been released that director Marc Webb is packing quite a lot into his upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The May 2 release is already set to feature Jamie Foxx as Electro, Paul Giamatti as Rhino and Dane DeHaan and Chris Cooper as Harry and Norman Osborn. That's in addition to teases in the trailer of Doctor Octopus and the Vulture, with further rumors floating around surrounding every foe of Spidey from Venom to the Robot Master. Webb today revealed at SXSW (via The Hollywood Reporter) that, while he's not giving away exactly what surprises are in store come May, too many villains aren't going to hurt the story and that Giamatti's Rhino actually only has four minutes of screen time.

"We're obviously familiar with the complaints people had," he said. "We're very careful to make sure the stories intertwine. For Peter Parker, it's very important that you create obstacles that are difficult to overcome... I'm going to embrace the spectacle. I'm not going to be beholden to smallness. I want it to be fantastic, to be big, to command and express that feeling when you're a kid and reading the comics."

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to set up The Sinister Six

It was confirmed by Sony Pictures late last year that the studio is looking at expanding their Marvel fare with upcoming big screen spinoffs like Venom and The Sinister Six. Today, EW has both revealed its latest cover, showcasing Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and dropped a few more details about the expansion of the cinematic Spider-verse. Check out the cover beneath the new quotes!

“At the tail end of this movie we set up some of the other characters that will probably end up being in the Sinister Six,” Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal tells the magazine. “We’re going forward on all fronts.”

Although the line-up of villains for the bad guy ensemble hasn't been revealed, the trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 suggests that characters like Doctor Octopus and The Vulture are being eyed as potential recruits.

“Villains can be very entertaining,” adds producer Avi Arad. “It’s not like somebody’s born and they’re a villain. Something happens and it changes their lives. Some people can deal with it — they become the heroes. Some people can’t and hate the world because of what they felt was done to them — they become the villains.”
