:roflmao:

Time for another critical view on a review (and, of course, the component): 6moons review of Clearaudio’s Goldfinger cartridge
http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/clea ... inger.html
The author writes: “A totally new design from the ground up”
However, the “gold coils symmetrically balanced both front to back and side to side and attached directly to the cantilever with no traditional suspension” have already been subject of a patent granted in 1982!
“The long boron cantilever with 24 kt gold coils”
AFAIK, the story that P.Suchy himself tells is that he has bought a large stock of boron rod many moons ago. As far as I’m aware Clearaudio is using gold wire for the coils since the Accurate simply because the front coil, then still from copper, was oxidizing and the corresponding channel went dead!
Do you call that “new design”? I certainly don’t.
Next, the Goldfinger’s 100 dB dynamic range: what is the dynamic range of an LP? Groove noise is at about -75 dB (6 kHz), maximum levels of up to 30 dB (at 6 kHz) have been measured, which results in a dynamic range of 105 dB (figures from JAES papers).
The 80 micron figure at 315 Hz: most well designed cartridges will track 80 micron at 315 Hz, so the Goldfinger is nothing exceptional. Furthermore, when one looks at actual signal levels on records one will see that max. levels are found in the 1-10 kHz region so the indication of the performance at 315 Hz seems to be of low interest. How does the Goldfinger perform there, big question mark.
Shure’s top model has a dynamic range of about 102 dB (at 5 Khz) so the Goldfinger isn’t any better.
“My best theory is that the extraordinary frequency response (100,000 Hz) reveals more high-end musical information (and possibly inaudible cues)…”
According to Stan Ricker with half-speed cutting bandwidth (no overload) is 14 Hz – 50 kHz. But not all records are cut half-speed, so that 25 Khz is upper limit. Then, above about 5 kHz there’s only harmonics (in acoustical instruments), what about the level of these harmonics w.r.t. groove noise? The audibility of sound above 20 kHz is still not proven beyond doubt.
“The new HD diamond tip is designed to be an ideal fit to the groove and it is small (0.008 mm x 0.040 mm).”
The difference in side radius of recording and playback stylus generates tracing distortion. Van den Hul uses 2 micron styli, Ogura 3 micron, MicroRidge 3.8 micron. With 8 micron side radius the Goldring stylus isn’t small and is producing considerably more tracing distortion than necessary.
So we have a $8000 dollar cartridge that produces more tracing distortion than necessary, has the dynamic range of a $300 moving magnet, and is based on a 25 years old concept. And once again, we have a review where signs of critical journalism are completely missing.
Did I mention that that cartridge weighs a hefty 17 grams? Doesn't seem to bother the reviewer a lot. Perhaps that all of his records are perfectly centred.
