Columbia Pictures Prepares for Battle !

Columbia Pictures has preemptively picked up Battle: Los Angeles, a sci-fi script from screenwriter Chris Bertolini, for Neal Moritz to produce via his Original Films, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The story follows one Marine platoon's encounter in the battle against an alien invasion on the streets of Los Angeles.

"I love the idea, and I love the script. I like it all," Moritz said. "We are going to be in production within six months. What's attractive to me is that it's a huge event movie that can be done at a modest scale."

Ο Μπρόντι κι η Σενιέ στα χέρια του Αρτζέντο


Ο Ντάριο Αρτζέντο επιστρέφει με το χρώμα του κίτρινου στον τίτλο αλλά εννοείται με αποχρώσεις του κόκκινου στο περιεχόμενο της ταινίας. Στο "Giallo" λοιπόν, το οποίο αναμένεται να είναι τρομερό, θα συμμετέχει (μαζί με την επικίνδυνα γοητευτική κόρη του σκηνοθέτη, Άζια Αρτζέντο , την Έλσα Πατάκι και τον Ρέι Λιότα) ένας από τους πιο κουλ ηθοποιούς της γενιάς του, ο Άντριεν Μπρόντι και η συμπαθέστατη Εμανουέλ Σενιέ.

Βέβαια για να το δούμε λίγο πιο εγκυκλοπαιδικά το θέμα και να μεταμορφωθούμε σε cinema geeks, το Giallo δε σημαίνει μόνο κίτρινο, αλλά και κάτι άλλο περισσότερο κινηματογραφικό.

Πρόκειται για ένα είδος 70's θριλεροταινιών (αρχικά ξεκίνησε ως λογοτεχνικό και μετά το υιοθέτησε η τέχνη στη θύρα 7) οι οποίες ήταν αρχικά γνωστές ως gialli και οι περισσότερες στη λίστα είναι του Αρτζέντο, όπως το "Suspiria", "The cat o nine tails ", "Four Flies on grey velvet". Οπότε το "Giallo" μπορούμε να το χαρακτηρίσουμε και κάτι σαν ένα φόρο τιμής στα παλιά τα χρόνια.

Τι γίνεται, όμως, μέσα στο αρτζεντικό δημιούργημα; Κατά τη διάρκεια ενός fashion week στο Μιλάνο, το μοντέλο Celine (Πατάκι) απαγάγεται από έναν παρανοικό και σαδιστή δολοφόνο γνωστό ως Yellow. Tότε η αδερφή της Linda (Άζια Αρτζέντο) με τη βοήθεια του Ιταλού ντεντέκτιβ Enzo Lavia (το πιο πιθανό είναι να είναι ο Μπρόντι) προσπαθούν να βρουν που βρίσκεται πριν να είναι αργά και η Celine καταλήξει όπως τα κρέατα στα ψυγεία των κρεοπωλείων.

Με λίγα λόγια θα χυθεί αίμα..

Thomas Jane starring and directing in 3D film noir The Dark Country

The Dark Country is supposed to be a film noir thriller using cutting edge 3-D technology via Sony's Stage 6 films which does smaller budget releases and direct to DVD stuff.

It's being directed by Thomas Jane of The Mist fame who also stars in it along with Ron Perlman and is about "a couple en route from Las Vegas are forced to deal with a body out in the desert making their honeymoon one hellish ride."

Director of Photography Geoff Boyle is looking to take film noir to the next level via new 3-D technology and director Thomas Jane had this to say: "Dark Country is a film that I wanted to express in a manner that remains true to the stylistic choices of film noir, while delivering an immersive reality and visceral experience that only the next generation of 3D cinematography could provide.

Every medium brings a life of it's own to the story-telling process, and with Dark Country, I wanted audiences to be there, to be in the car with the characters, and make the story their own with a heightened sense of physical contact never experienced before.

The mobility and physical expression we were able to achieve with the Silicon Imaging camera rigs truly transformed my personal vision into a living and breathing visual reality." I for one am a big film noir fan and am greatly looking forward to what they've got in store for us.

Guillermo del Toro Interested in BioShock Movie Too?

We first reported the rumor that a BioShock movie was in the works back in January. The game from 2K was one of 2007's most highly praised gaming releases receiving high scores from critics and selling like hotcakes upon its release in August. The immersive environment found under the depths in the city of Rapture does actually seem like a peculiarly perfect fit for Guillermo, who we all know is brilliant at imagining darker environments and intricate creatures (of which BioShock has both). However, let's not jump the gun. As much as Guillermo actually does love BioShock, he's not too keen on the movie.

"I love BIOSHOCK from a design point of view," says del Toro. "But Unless its a HELLBOY sequel I am not that eager to engage in another action-oriented movie. Even if the other elements are right. BUT… if I found the right pitch on the material, who knows - the BIOSHOCK universe is indeed wonderful."

So in essence - don't get your hopes up. First off, it was a rumor that a BioShock movie was in the works anyway. The report had said that a "major film production company" was in talks but nothing was officially confirmed. And since then we haven't heard anything either. So take this entire post as a bit of speculation (for fun, if anything). What is confirmed is that Guillermo would be interested and is fond of the game - but that doesn't mean that a film adaptation is even in the works nor is he in the running for director.

As for The Hobbit, we already reported a few weeks ago that things were on track and that Guillermo wasn't officially signed. He reiterates this point again stating, "I have to be patient and wait until the papers are done and my attachment is real." He also goes on to add that "there has been a lot of movement. And for the last few weeks there has been a lot of creative / cast / crew / visual talks and agreements and we have witnessed great progress in areas."

I might have the chance to talk with Guillermo this coming weekend at the New York Comic Con. If I do get to talk with him (or if anyone else asks him during the Q&A), I'll be sure to bring up BioShock and The Hobbit. Unfortunately all updates on The Hobbit won't be any different until it's announced by New Line officially, but I'll be interested to hear about Guillermo's future after Hellboy II.

He's got so many other projects in the works already as well: At the Mountains of Madness, Frankenstein, Champions, a B.P.R.D. spin-off, and even Dr. Strange.

Zack Snyder to Direct Guardians of Ga'hoole


Zack Snyder (300, upcoming Watchmen) is set to direct Guardians of Ga'Hoole, an animated feature film based on the series of children's books by Kathryn Lasky.

Village Roadshow is making the film and Warner Bros. will distribute.

The film is set in the Forest of Tyto, where Barn Owls live in peace until their kingdom is threatened by an evil that could destroy their home.

The script was written by John Orloff (A Mighty Heart) and John Collee (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World). The pic will be produced by Zareh Nalbandian, with Donald DeLine, Deborah Snyder and Lionel Wigram executive producing.

The intention is to execute in Sydney, Australia, through Animal Logic, which worked with Village Roadshow and WB on Happy Feet. The film is on a fast track and is likely to be ready by 2009 or 2010.

Spielberg Adapting Ghost in the Shell into Live-Action 3D!

After 19 years since its debut in 1989, DreamWorks has finally secured the rights to adapt the Japanese manga and anime series Ghost in the Shell into a 3D live-action feature film.

Both Universal and Sony were also chasing the rights, but Steven Spielberg himself took a personal interest in it and made sure it ended up in the hands of his company - DreamWorks.

Spielberg says that Ghost in the Shell is one of his favorite stories and is "a genre that has arrived and we enthusiastically welcome it to DreamWorks." This plays off of the announcement from February that Akira, one of the other heralded Japanese anime properties, is being adapted by Warner Brothers as well.

Kenneth Johnson wants to bring his V saga to a very big screen near you

Oh yeah baby this would be sweet. Kenneth Johnson's dramatic alien invasion series V remains one of my favorite sci-fi shows ever and, while his latest book V:The Second Generation was a nice surprise my excitement for it pales in comparison to the idea of a feature film reboot. But Johnson doesn't just want to remake the original. Oh no, he says he's looking to kick start a whole new franchise which would begin with a remake and continue into the 2nd Gen book. More after the break.

Said Johnson about the plans: "... since I own the motion picture rights to V, we’re in the process to do a remake of the original mini-series first as a theatrical feature, which I’m so jazzed about because it will give me an opportunity to really realize it and execute it in a way that was impossible to do back then. Then that will lead to the obvious sequel, because it is a franchise, and then we’ll get into The Second Generation and I'm hoping we’ll be able to do two movies, because there’s certainly enough material in the novel to warrant two separate sequels. That’s my goal at this point and that’s what we’re in the process of doing. I just literally came from a meeting, 15-20 minutes ago with a fellow in Beverly Hills who really says that we’re gonna do it."

To Warcraft στη μεγάλη οθόνη το 2009!

Για όλους τους μανιακούς fan του παιχνιδιού (που είναι και πολλοί φαντάζομαι) έρχονται καλά νέα από τη BlizzCon 2007. Επιβεβαιώθηκε ότι πρόκειται να γυριστεί live-action film ενώ δεν έχει ακόμα καθοριστεί σε τι βαθμό θα υπάρχουν ειδικά εφέ. Η ταινία έχει προγραμματιστεί να κάνει πρεμιέρα το 2009, το σενάριο επεξεργάζεται ακόμα ενώ σκηνοθέτης δεν έχει βρεθεί προς το παρόν. Σύμφωνα με τον παραγωγό Thomas Tull(300) η ταινία έχει προϋπολογισμό περίπου $100 εκ. ενώ ειπώθηκε ότι δε θέλουν να κάνουν άλλη μια περιπετειώδη ταινία από video-game αλλά μια επική πολεμική ταινία!

Τέλος όσον αφορά την υπόθεση, αρχικά οι άνθρωποι της Blizzard ήθελαν η ταινία να βασίζεται στο πρώτο Warcraft με τους ανθρώπους να πολεμούν τα Orcs. Όμως αυτό απορρίφθηκε λόγω της ομοιότητας με το Lord of the Rings.

Έτσι κι αφού το Warcraft έγινε απίστευτα δημοφιλές με το World of Warcraft τα γεγονότα της ταινίας θα εκτυλίσσονται ένα χρόνο πριν την έναρξη του WoW και την ιστορία θα την δούμε από την πλευρά της Alliance.

Ξεκίνησαν τα γυρίσματα της νέας ταινίας του Κώστα Γαβρά

Aπό τις γαλλικές Αλπεις ξεκίνησαν τα γυρίσματα της πρώτης γαλλοελληνικής συμπαραγωγής του Κώστα Γαβρά, με πρωταγωνιστές τους Ιεροκλή Μιχαηλίδη και Αννυ Λούλου. Μετά την ολοκλήρωση των γυρισμάτων στη Γαλλία, η παραγωγή θα μεταφεθεί στην Κρήτη για πέντε εβδομάδες.

«Κάθε άνθρωπος έχει τηv ιστορία του. Αυτός που απλώνει το χέρι του για ελεημοσύνη, έχει τηv ιστορία του. Η γυναίκα που κοιμάται μισοπεθαμένη από το μεθύσι στα σκοτάδια του μετρό, έχει τηv ιστορία της. Αυτός που σαν τον Σαρλώ το σκάει μόλις αντικρίσει κάποιον με στολή, έχει την ιστορία του». Αυτές οι φράσεις συνοψίζουν τη βασική ιδέα πίσω από την ταινία.

Μια τέτοια ιστορία ανέλαβε να αφηγηθεί ο σκηνοθέτης Κώστας Γαβράς στη νέα του ταινία με τίτλο Ο Παράδεισος στη Δύση. Πρόκειται για την ονειρική πορεία ενός μετανάστη, ο οποίος αναζητά μια εστία.

To σενάριο συνυπογράφει, μαζί με τον Κώστα Γαβρά, o Ζαν Κοντ Γκρινμπέργκ, με τον οποίο συνεργάστηκαν επίσης στις ταινίες Τσεκούρι και Αμήν.

Το ρόλο του Ηλία, του μετανάστη πρωταγωνιστή της ταινίας, ερμηνεύει ο Ιταλός ηθοποιός Ρικάρντο Σκαμάρτσιο, γνωστός από τα Romanzo Criminale σε σκηνοθεσία Μικέλε Πλασίντο αλλά και από το O αδελφός μου είναι μοναχοπαίδι. Από ελληνικής πλευράς εκτός από τους Ιεροκλή Μιχαηλίδη και Αννυ Λούλου, πρωταγωνιστούν οι Κωνσταντίνος Μαρκουλάκης, Τάσος Κοστής, Ντίνα Μιχαηλίδη.

Tα γυρίσματα της ταινίας ξεκίνησαν από τις γαλλικές Αλπεις στις 31 Μαρτίου, ενώ αυτές τις ημέρες συνεχίζονται σε προάστιο του Παρισιού για να καταλήξουν στο Παρίσι, όπου θα ολοκληρωθούν στις 12 Μαΐου.

Στη συνέχεια, όλοι οι συντελεστές θα μεταφερθούν στην Κρήτη για πέντε εβδομάδες και υπολογίζεται ότι τα γυρίσματα θα ολοκληρωθούν στα τέλη Ιουνίου.

Shyamalan on Avatar :The Last Airbender

Empire Online got a chance to talk to M. Night Shyamalan about his planned adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender at Paramount's MTV Films and Nick Movies.

Shyamalan is set to write, direct and produce the live-action film.

Nick TV's "Avatar" follows the adventures of the successor to a long line of Avatars who must put aside his irresponsible ways and stop the Fire Nation from enslaving the Water, Earth and Air nations.

Variety has just announced that Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies have set a July 2, 2010 release date for The Last Airbender.

The studios have dropped "Avatar" from the title to avoid confusion with James Cameron's Avatar, opening on December 18, 2009.

Ομογενής ηθοποιός πρωταγωνιστεί σto νέο φιλμ τρόμου του Χόλιγουντ ΤΗΕ RUINS


Δυο φορές τον απέρριψε το Εθνικό Ινστιτούτο Δραματικής Τέχνης της Αυστραλίας.

"Πήγαινε να βελτιωθείς" του είπαν. Εκείνος βαρέθηκε να περιμένει, αλλά πήγε και τον βρήκε η τύχη του!

Όχι ακριβώς η τύχη του, αλλά το Χόλιγουντ!

Πρόκειται για τον 19χρονο ομογενή, Δημήτρη Μπαβέα, με καταγωγή από τα Κύθηρα, που πρωταγωνιστεί στη νέα ταινία φρίκης "The Ruins" που άρχισε ήδη να προβάλλεται στις ΗΠΑ και σύντομα θα προβληθεί και στην Αυστραλία.

Η ταινία γυρίστηκε στην Χρυσή Ακτή της Αυστραλίας και σ' αυτήν ο Μπαβέας ενσαρκώνει το ρόλο ενός "μισότρελου" Έλληνα, που τον λένε Δημήτρη και μιλάει ελληνικά.

"Νομίζω πως η ταινία αυτή, ως φιλμ τρόμου θα τρομάξει πολλούς θεατές", λέει ο νεαρός ομογενής ηθοποιός.

Dreamworks Studios Options Atlantis Rising

DreamWorks Studios has optioned the rights to make a feature film from Platinum Studios Inc.'s comic book "Atlantis Rising," it was announced today by Adam Goodman, President of Production for DreamWorks Studios.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who brought the project to the studio, will produce through their DreamWorks based company. Platinum Studios' Chairman and CEO, Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, will also produce. The Greenberg Group CEO and former Universal Pictures senior executive Randy Greenberg will executive produce and Platinum Studios' Rich Marincic will co-produce.

Created by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, "Atlantis Rising" is a five-part mini series first published by Platinum Studios Comics in November of 2007. The fifth and final installment in the series is due on comic book shelves in late April 2008.

In "Atlantis Rising," seismic disturbances at sea force world militaries to investigate the deepest part of our ocean, where an underground civilization emerges to do war with planet Earth.

"Atlantis Rising" marks the second property that DreamWorks has optioned from Platinum Studios. DreamWorks, along with Universal Studios, optioned the rights to "Cowboys and Aliens" last year and is currently developing the sci-fi western adventure along with Kurtzman and Orci and Imagine Entertainment.

"We are excited about bringing audiences into the vast mysterious world of the ocean's depths for what we hope will be an edge-of-your seat experience," said Adam Goodman, DreamWorks' President of Production. "Our team at DreamWorks looks forward to this new association with Platinum Studios, and Kurtzman and Orci."

"'Atlantis Rising' is a provocative sci-fi thriller that at its core echoes the global debate on our impact to the environment," said Rosenberg. "To again be working with the creative duo of DreamWorks and Kurtzman/Orci, I believe will give the project a bold and enthralling take on this classic myth."

"No sea horses or tridents here," said producers Kurtzman and Orci. "The comic brings a fresh, techno-thriller approach to a story that holds all the tenets of a classic us-versus-them alien invasion movie."

Kurtzman and Orci currently have an overall producing deal with DreamWorks Studios.

They are currently producing the action thriller Eagle Eye for DreamWorks which will be released in theaters this September. They have also written several screenplays for DreamWorks projects, including Transformers and The Island, and are currently at work on Transformers 2.

Among their other writing credits are Mission: Impossible III, The Legend of Zorro, and next year's Star Trek, which they are also executive producing. They also served as producers and writers on the hit TV series, "Alias," and are executive producing the action/drama "Fringe" which is scheduled to debut on Fox in the fall.

The X-Files Sequel Titled - The X-Files: I Want to Believe

Fox has officially announced the title for the upcoming X-Files sequel - The X-Files: I Want to Believe. The series' creator and film's writer and director Chris Carter said of the announcement, "it's a natural title. It's a story that involves the difficulties in mediating faith and science. 'I Want to Believe.' It really does suggest Mulder's struggle with his faith." Now with the title finally out of the way, that leaves 100 more days left for the hype to slowly build before The X-Files: I Want to Believe hits theaters on July 25th.

Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai getting a remake

Variety is reporting that out of Weinstein's very large Asian fund will come a remake for Kurosawa's classic, The Seven Samurai, and it'll start shooting 4th quarter this year for a release sometime in 2009.

The cast will feature American, European, and Asian stars. "A veteran samurai, who has fallen on hard times, answers a village's request for protection from bandits. He gathers 6 other samurai to help him, and they teach the townspeople how to defend themselves, and they supply the samurai with three small meals a day. The film culminates in a giant battle when 40 bandits attack the village."

First Look: G.I. Joe's Scarlett Revealed!

Scarlett is one of the primary characters in the G.I. Joe series. Although she is as adept with standard weapons as any of her comrades, her weapon of choice is the crossbow which can fire various bolts with specialized functions.

Her rank is Master Sergeant and she serves from time to time as team leader. Her primary specialty is counter intelligence and she is additionally skilled in martial arts and acrobatics.

G.I. Joe is directed by Stephen Sommers (Deep Rising, The Mummy, Van Helsing) and written by both Stuart Beattie and Skip Woods. The movie arrives in theaters on August 7th, 2009.

Piranha 3D Remake Update from Alexandre Aja

That was the really exciting reason we jumped on that movie," Aja tells ShockTillYouDrop.com. "We were on the set of P2 and we were like, 'How cool would it be to see that live-action movie in 3-D?' We are thinking at the same time, let's see a real R-rated movie in 3-D with the new technology! So, Piranha is going to be completely in 3-D."

"That was the plot of the script and that was really fun," Aja enthuses. "Years later the script came back in a different incarnation, so we convinced Bob Weinstein to take the Spring Break plot and let us do what we wanted to do with it. There is not one character or one situation that is similar to the Joe Dante or James Cameron [Piranha] movies - it's completely, completely, completely different."
