Kasdan and Kinberg on board to write Star Wars sequels

Now that Michael Arndt has been announced as the screenwriter for Star Wars: Episode VII, Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm are already bringing talent on board for the next two films as well.

Deadline reports that Disney and Lucasfilm have approached Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg to start work on the subsequent installments that were mapped out by George Lucas.

Kasdan worked on the scripts for two of the original "Star Wars" films, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and wrote Raiders of the Lost Ark. Kinberg's credits include X-Men: First Class, Sherlock Holmes and the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Lawrence Kasdan & Simon Kinberg writing Star Wars spin-offs instead?

A little over a week ago, it was announced that writers Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg had been brought on to begin writing the scripts for subsequent Star Wars films that follow Michael Arndt's Star Wars: Episode VII, but now it seems that's only partially true. THR is reporting that the films these two have been brought on to write are separate projects that might actually be spin-off films about individual characters from the Star Wars universe and not necessarily "Episodes VII" and "IX."

Disney is said to be planning on taking the 'Marvel' approach to Star Wars and releasing a new film every 2-3 years with some that focus on different aspects of the Universe, but they're remaining tight lipped about all of this for now.

How involved will George Lucas be with Star Wars: Episode VII?

When it was announced that Disney bought Lucasfilm and the studio was going to make more Star Wars movies, the question of 'What will George do?' rang out and was quickly answered with 'he's just a consultant'. Lucas spoke with Access Hollywood about what his being a 'consultant' entails.

“[If the filmmakers ask],‘Who’s this guy?’ I can tell them,” he said. “I mean, they have a hundred encyclopedias and things, but I actually know a lot. I can say, ‘This is this and this is that.' Basically I’m not — I don’t really have much to do.”

Lucasfilm also posted the fourth part of Kathleen Kennedy and Lucas's conversation about Star Wars, and in this segment they explore what makes the appeal of Star Wars universal. You can check it out in the video below.

BREAKING NEWS: J.J. Abrams to direct Star Wars: Episode VII!

Star Trek Into Darkness helmer J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII for Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm, reports TheWrap. The site says that Ben Affleck was also in contention.


Back in November, Abrams commented on the possibility of him directing and it sounded like it wasn't happening:


"Look, Star Wars is one of my favorite movies of all time. I frankly feel that – I almost feel that, in a weird way, the opportunity for whomever it is to direct that movie, it comes with the burden of being that kind of iconic movie and series. I was never a big Star Trek fan growing up, so for me, working on Star Trek didn’t have any of that, you know, almost fatal sacrilege, and so, I am looking forward more then anyone to the next iterations of Star Wars, but I believe I will be going as a paying moviegoer!"


TheWrap adds that Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy has been courting Abrams for the director's chair for a while.

Ένας από τους αγαπημένους μου σκηνοθέτες (λόγο Lost, Star Trek, σε λίγους μήνες Star Trek Into Darkness, και πλέον και του Star Wars).

Πιστεύω πως κάνανε την καλύτερη δυνατή επιλογή για ένα τόσο MEGA franchise όπως αυτό του Star Wars και την συνέχιση του από τα χέρια του τρισμέγιστου George Lucas πλέον στα χέρια του J.J. Abrams !!!

Official Announcement: J.J. Abrams to Direct Star Wars: Episode VII

The story broke early on Thursday, but now Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm have officially confirmed that J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII! The statement reads as follows:


J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII, the first of a new series of Star Wars films to come from Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. Abrams will be directing and Academy Award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay.

"It's very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie," said Kennedy. "J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture."

George Lucas went on to say "I've consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He's an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn't be in better hands."

"To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor,” J.J. Abrams said. “I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid."

J.J., his longtime producing partner Bryan Burk, and Bad Robot are on board to produce along with Kathleen Kennedy under the Disney | Lucasfilm banner.

Also consulting on the project are Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg. Kasdan has a long history with Lucasfilm, as screenwriter on The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi. Kinberg was writer on Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Abrams and his production company Bad Robot have a proven track record of blockbuster movies that feature complex action, heartfelt drama, iconic heroes and fantastic production values with such credits as Star Trek, Super 8, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, and this year’s Star Trek Into Darkness. Abrams has worked with Lucasfilm's preeminent postproduction facilities, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, on all of the feature films he has directed, beginning with Mission: Impossible III. He also created or co-created such acclaimed television series as Felicity, Alias, Lost and Fringe.

Could Yoda get a stand-alone Star Wars film?

Although last month's rumor of a stand-alone Star Wars film directed by Zack Snyder was immediately shot down, Ain't It Cool News has a brand new one that says that a film is being planned that will follow the adventures of Yoda. This feature, the site claims, is one of several in the works that will give famous characters solo films not directly connected to the new trilogy that will begin with J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII.


Assuming the rumors pan out, details on what a Yoda film might entail are unclear and no talent is, as of yet, rumored to be attached.

Disney confirms stand-alone Star Wars films




Walt Disney Pictures CEO Bob Iger has confirmed rumors that the studio is looking at a series of Star Wars films that will see release independent of the new trilogy and that will focus on specific characters from the overall Star Wars universe.


The news arrives on the heels of yesterday's rumor that claimed the first such film would follow the adventures of Yoda. While that rumor has not been confirmed, Iger's comments suggest some truth to the reports.

New Star Wars stand-alone films to follow Boba Fett and young Han Solo

Less than 24 hours after Walt Disney Pictures officially confirmed plans to develop stand-alone feature films in the Star Wars universe, EW is reporting that they have learned which two characters the first two projects will focus on: Boba Fett and a young Han Solo.

Plans for the Solo film call for it to take place in the time between the prequel trilogy and the original trilogy. No plot details have been revealed, but it's a near-certainty that a brand new actor would have to step in to play everyone's favorite scruffy looking Nerf-herder.

The adventures of Han Solo pre-A New Hope was actually the focus of one of the earliest Star Wars novels, 1979's "Han Solo at Star's End," set two years before the events of the 1977 film.

The Boba Fett film, meanwhile, would be set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back and would follow the bounty hunter on an intergalactic adventure.

Both of the the films (of which Lawrence Kasdan is said to be writing one and Simon Kinberg writing the other) are tentatively planned to see release sometime after 2015 when J.J. Abrams' Episode VII is planned to hit theaters.

Previous rumors called for a stand-alone film to follow the adventures of Yoda, but that has not yet been confirmed.

Mark Hamill talks Star Wars: Episode VII

The rumor that Harrison Ford had signed on to return as Han Solo in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII started last week, but Mark Hamill now says that he and the other original stars have not officially signed on for the film. They are talking to Lucasfilm about it, however.


"They're talking to us," he said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. "George [Lucas] wanted to know whether we'd be interested. He did say that if we didn't want to do it, they wouldn't cast another actor in our parts – they would write us out. … I can tell you right away that we haven't signed any contracts. We're in the stage where they want us to go in and meet with Michael Arndt, who is the writer, and Kathleen Kennedy, who is going to run Lucasfilm. Both have had meetings set that were postponed -- on their end, not mine. They're more busy than I am."


Hamill says in the interview that he doesn't know what he film will be about officially, but based on his tone, it would appear he knows more than he is letting on.


"I'm assuming, because I haven't talked to the writers, that these movies would be about our offspring -- like my character would be sort of in the Obi-Wan range [as] an influential character. … When I found out [while making the original trilogy] that ultimate good news/bad news joke – the good news is there's a real attractive, hot girl in the universe; the bad news is she's your sister – I thought, 'Well, I'm going to wind up like Sir Alec [Guinness]. I'm going to be a lonely old hermit living out in some kind of desert igloo with a couple of robots.'"


Also with the rumors of Ford returning in full swing, Hamill mentioned that he thinks everyone should come back for the film rather than just one actor, adding fuel to the fire that he knows more than he's saying.


"Another thing I'd want to make sure of is are we going to have the whole gang back? Is Carrie and Harrison and Billy Dee and Tony Daniels, everybody that's around from the original [returning]? I want to make sure that everybody's on board here, rather than just one."


Hamill also mentioned the direction he thought the film should go in terms of tone and its special effects use, and it makes sense to us.


"I said to George that I wanted to go back to the way it was, in the sense that ours was much more carefree and lighthearted and humorous – in my opinion, anyway....hope they find the right balance of CGI with practical effects. I love props, I love models, miniatures, matte paintings -- I'm sort of old school. I think if you go too far in the direction of CGI it winds up looking like just a giant a video game, and that's unfortunate. … If they listen to me at all, it'll be, 'Lighten up and go retro with the way it looks.'"

George Lucas says Hamill, Fisher and Ford are pretty much signed for Star Wars

Bloomberg Businessweek has published a new feature on Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm which includes a few interesting bits!


George Lucas tells them that Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford were pretty much signed on for Star Wars: Episode VII before the Disney deal was even made.


"We had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison—or we were pretty much in final stages of negotiation," Lucas said. "So I called them to say, 'Look, this is what's going on.'" He pauses. "Maybe I'm not supposed to say that. I think they want to announce that with some big whoop-de-do, but we were negotiating with them." Then he adds: "I won't say whether the negotiations were successful or not."


As was previously announced, the studio is also developing standalone movies and Disney's Bob Iger also said he's looking to expand sales of "Star Wars" merchandise overseas and that ABC and Lucasfilm are discussing a live-action TV series.

Star Wars movies coming every summer starting in 2015

Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm announced today at CinemaCon in Las Vegas that Star Wars: Episode VII will hit theaters in the summer of 2015 and that every summer after that will offer a "Star Wars" film, alternating with one of the standalone films.


We knew they were targeting "Episode VII" for 2015, but a summer date had not yet been confirmed. Also, while it was known they were working on standalone films, the fact that we'll be getting a "Star Wars" movie every summer is a new development. We don't know how many standalone films they are planning on making at this time in addition to the new trilogy.

Carrie Fisher talks about Star Wars: Episode VII

Carrie Fisher was again asked at the Calgary Comic Expo this weekend whether she will make an appearance in Star Wars: Episode VII as Princess Leia. Her response was an interesting one.


According to the Calgary Herald, she said the following:


Yes, Carrie Fisher confirmed to a rapt audience at the BMO Centre Saturday afternoon that she will in fact be reprising her most famous role of Princess Leia in a new series of Star Wars films, which will be produced by Disney. She was the first of the original cast members to announce her participation back in March, although apparently jumped the gun. Her publicist later said she was joking and that nothing had been confirmed.

However, it seems to be a done deal now. But for fans looking for a sneak-peek of what to expect in the new film, Fisher didn’t offer many juicy details.

“I like being bought by Disney, because they never wanted to buy me before,” she said during a talk at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo. “I’m glad they are doing a new movie because they are sending a trainer to my house so I can get in really good shape. So I’m really eating a lot of sugar in advance, as you can see. By the time I really get down to it I will have eaten everything.”

J.J. Abrams expects John Williams to return for Star Wars: Episode VII

As the pieces for Star Wars: Episode VII come together, many elements that are near and dear to the franchise will likely be returning. TrekMovie.com is reporting that director J.J. Abrams said he expects composer John Williams to return and score the new film. Williams has scored all of the previous Star Wars films and won an Academy Award for Best Original Score for the first film.


In other "Star Wars" news, The Wrap is reporting that visual effects studio ILM is considering opening a branch in London to perform their work on the new film. The reason for a potential move is due to "take advantage of foreign tax subsidies." The site also mentions the new movie might partially shoot across the pond as well.

J.J. Abrams talks about his approach to Star Wars

The announcement of J.J. Abrams being brought on to helm Star Wars: Episode VII has been a very controversial decision. His previous involvement in Star Trek has caused many to begrudge his hiring on Star Wars, but as he puts it himself, the job is "one of those once in a lifetime opportunities."


Abrams spoke with the BBC about the approach he his bringing to the film and hopefully it will persuade the naysayers.


"It's just about about approaching it from as authentic a place as possible, and not trying to apply what you believe or think, as much as trying to filter everything and get at it from the core of the characters. [It should be] what you deeply want to see, never what you assume the fans might like."


Many have been concerned that Abrams' work on both Star Trek and Star Wars will cause the two sci-fi titans to feel the same, but he doesn't feel that way.


"To me they are such wildly disparate universes - the back story, the tone, the mood, certainly the history [and] the characters - that I'm in no way worried."
